Recap: Philadelphia vs. Cincinnati

Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - Jay Bruce's leadoff home run in the eighth proved to be the difference as the Cincinnati Reds clipped the Philadelphia Phillies, 3-2, in the third edition of a four-game series.

Drew Stubbs and Ryan Ludwick drove in a run each for the Reds, who have won seven of their last 10.

Bronson Arroyo (10-7) worked into the ninth, picking up the win after scattering three hits and two runs while fanning four.

"I was hitting my spots, both sides of the plate," said Arroyo. "I can't complain about anything. My breaking ball, sinker were both there."

Domonic Brown doubled and homered for the Phillies, who have lost two in a row since winning Monday's series opener.

Vance Worley (6-9) served up eight hits and a pair of runs over six full frames in defeat.

Worley's effort kept the hosts within a run, but Bruce greeted Josh Lindblom in his second inning of relief by depositing a pitch into the second deck of right field for a 3-1 Cincinnati advantage.

Brown hit a one-out double in the home half, then Reds third baseman Scott Rolen booted a Placido Polanco grounder, but Brian Schneider hit into a rally- killing 6-4-3 double play.

Pinch-hitter Kevin Frandsen reached on an infield single to begin the ninth, and Arroyo gave way to Aroldis Chapman. Frandsen moved up on a wild pitch, then scored on a broken-bat pinch-single from Ty Wigginton.

The hard-throwing closer recovered to induce a fly to center from Chase Utley and a line out to deep left from Ryan Howard to post his 31st save.

Though Brown cut down a runner at the plate for an inning-ending double play in the fourth, the Reds snapped a scoreless tie and picked up two in the fifth on RBI singles from Stubbs and Ludwick.

Brown got one back on a two-out solo homer to right in the home half, putting the Phils on the board and breaking Arroyo's streak of 14 consecutive batters retired.

"He was tough...he keeps you off balance as he did all night," said Brown. "I might have been the only guy that he had thrown more than a couple pitches to."

Game Notes

Arroyo hadn't beaten Philadelphia since July 22, 2000 when he pitched for the Pittsburgh Pirates ... Brown hit his first big league home run since June 28, 2011 against the Red Sox and collected his fourth multi-hit game since being recalled from Triple-A on July 31 ... After going deep four times in a five- game span from August 12-17, Bruce's homer was his first in five contests since then ... Chapman tied a Reds single-season record by converting his 23rd straight save opportunity, a mark which was originally set by John Franco in 1988 and matched by Rob Dibble in 1991.
