Recap: Seattle vs. Boston

Seattle, WA (Sports Network) - Cody Ross hit a three-run homer in the sixth inning and Ryan Lavarnway belted a go-ahead shot later in the frame, as the Boston Red Sox snapped a season-high seven-game slide with a 4-3 victory over the Seattle Mariners.

Jon Lester (9-11) lasted six innings and allowed three runs on nine hits and two walks for Boston, which had scored two runs or less in its previous five games.

Andrew Bailey gave up a two-out triple to Eric Thames in the ninth, but retired Kyle Seager on a flyout to right field to pick up his second save.

"The guys looked happy after the gamem," Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine said. "It's great to see them with smiles. Coming from behind, getting Jon Lester a win, two home runs in an inning and a three run shot... it was a good win."

Seager and Franklin Gutierrez each hit solo homers for Seattle, which won the opener of this three-game series, 4-1, on Monday.

All four runs Blake Beavan (9-9) gave up came via the long ball. The Mariners starter was charged with eight hits over 5 2/3 innings.

Seattle jumped out to a 3-0 lead, but the Red Sox got to Beavan in the sixth.

Dustin Pedroia and Jacoby Ellsbury each singled in front of Ross, who took a first-pitch curveball over the wall in left field to tie the game. Two outs later, Lavarnway stepped in and launched one off the scoreboard in left field for his first home run of the season.

"It looked like his ball flattened out and he was missing in the middle of the plate. It happened in a hurry so we had to get him out of there. He was throwing the ball down and his breaking ball was good prior to that but he just wasn't the same guy that inning." M's manager Eric Wedge said of Beaven's sixth inning.

Junichi Tazawa stranded a pair of Mariners in the seventh, and Vicente Padilla twirled a scoreless eighth before Bailey narrowly closed out the win.

Jesus Montero's inside-out swing resulted in an RBI single to right field in the first inning, and home runs by Gutierrez and Seager in the third gave the hosts a 3-0 cushion.

Gutierrez crushed the first pitch of the inning over the wall in center, and two pitches later, Seager found the right-field seats for his team-leading 16th home run.

Game Notes

The Sox also snapped an eight-game skid on the road ... Beavan has lost all four career starts against the Sox ... Montero finished with three of Seattle's 12 hits ... Pedroia extended his hitting streak to 15 games.
