Recap: Tampa Bay vs. Oakland

St. Petersburg, FL (Sports Network) - Jonny Gomes led off the 12th inning with a homer, giving Oakland a 4-3 win over the Rays, handing Tampa Bay just its second loss at Tropicana Field this season.

Gomes, who was drafted by Tampa Bay in 2001 and played for them through the 2008 season, banged a 1-2 split fastball from Joel Peralta (0-1) barely over the wall in left field.

Brian Fuentes (2-0) allowed one hit over two innings and Grant Balfour secured his seventh save of the year when Matt Joyce grounded into a game-ending double play.

Josh Reddick also homered and knocked in two for the Athletics, who have won three of their last four games.

Carlos Pena, Ben Zobrist and Elliot Johnson went deep for the Rays, who had their six-game winning streak snapped. They fell to 13-2 at home and lost in the 1,000th game of manager Joe Maddon's tenure with the Rays.

"We try not to hang our heads for too long," Pena said.

Reddick homered to right-center in the first inning and Kila Ka'aihue singled in a run in the top of the third, but Johnson's homer to right leading off the bottom half made it 2-1.

Daric Barton scored on Reddick's single in the fourth, just after J.P. Howell came into the game to relieve starter Jeremy Hellickson.

Zobrist led off the bottom of the fourth with a blast over the wall in center and Pena tied it with a lead-off shot to right in the fifth.

Pinch-hitter Jeff Keppinger singled leading off the Tampa Bay ninth and made it to third, but B.J. Upton's fly ball to right sent the game to extra innings.

The A's had the bases full with one out in the 10th, but failed to come through as Brandon Inge fanned and Jemile Weeks grounded out.

Gomes made a spectacular catch at the wall in the bottom of the 10th.

Game Notes

A's starting pitcher Bartolo Colon allowed eight hits over three innings...Maddon became the fifth manager in the modern era to manage at least 1,000 games for one team without ever playing in the majors. The others are Earl Weaver (Orioles), Joe McCarthy (Yankees), Jim Leyland (Pirates) and Danny Ozark (Phillies)...The A's have now won 10 of the last 15 games against the Rays...The Rays fell to 7-2 in one-run games...They had won 10 in a row at home.
