Recap: Minnesota vs. Cleveland
Minneapolis, MN (Sports Network) - Cole De Vries worked six scoreless innings on Saturday and the Minnesota Twins blanked the Cleveland Indians, 3-0, in the second test of a four-game series at Target Field.
De Vries (5-5) surrendered just four hits and fanned two while walking one to earn his third consecutive positive decision. Brian Duensing and Jared Burton tossed scoreless relief innings and Glen Perkins got through the ninth unscathed to earn his 11th save of the year, and first at home.
Joe Mauer hit an RBI single and Josh Willingham added a sacrifice fly for the Twins, who had lost four of their last five entering play on Saturday. Justin Morneau contributed an RBI with a bases-loaded walk in the triumph.
"I think we played well tonight," Twins infielder Jamey Carroll said. "We got some big hits when we needed them and played a pretty clean game."
Zach McAllister (5-7) took the loss after giving up two runs on two hits and three walks over three innings. Shin-Soo Choo had two hits in the Indians' second loss in their last three games.
Cleveland stranded runners in scoring position in the first and second innings before Minnesota broke the scoreless deadlock with a pair of runs in the third.
Ben Revere got things started with a one-out single and Jamey Carroll was plunked. Both runners moved up a base on a double steal and Mauer ripped one back up the middle to score Revere. Carroll then trotted home on a sacrifice fly by Willingham.
The Twins loaded the bases in the fifth on singles by Revere and Carroll and a walk to Willingham with one out. Scott Maine entered the game in relief of Chris Seddon for the Indians, but walked Morneau to plate Revere, extending the Twins lead to 3-0.
Perkins retired Choo, Jason Kipnis and Asdrubal Cabrera in order in the ninth to secure the victory.
"The bullpen came in and did a good job, but offensively, we couldn't score any runs," Indians manager Manny Acta said. "We struggled against De Vries once he started throwing breaking balls for strikes."
Game NotesPrior to Saturday's game, former Twins manager Tom Kelly had his No. 10
retired by the club. Kelly is the Twins all-time leader and ranks
43rd on Major League's Baseball all-time list with 1140 managerial wins. He
also had a postseason record of 16-8, winning the 1987 World Series and the
1991 World Series ... Mauer played in his 100th career game ... The Twins have
won eight of their last 10 games against Cleveland and won at home for the
first time since August 29 ... The Indians finished 0-for-3 with runners in
scoring position and left three on base.
