Arizona Diamondbacks (69-71) at San Diego Padres (65-75), 4:05 p.m. (ET)

(Sports Network) - The Arizona Diamondbacks hope to improve their postseason status when they shoot for a series win over the San Diego Padres this afternoon at Petco Park.

Arizona is 5 1/2 games off a wild card spot and evened this three-game set with Saturday's 8-5 victory. Jason Kubel hit two homers and drove in three runs, while Justin Upton went deep for the Diamondbacks, who are 5-4 on a 10- game road trip.

D-backs starter Wade Miley earned the victory after giving up five runs on eight hits and three walks with six strikeouts over 5 1/3 frames.

"The offense did a great job setting the tempo early in the game and they picked me up throughout the night," Miley said.

J.J. Putz struck out the side in the ninth for his 29th save.

The Diamondbacks will return to the desert after this series and will host Los Angeles, San Francisco and San Diego in an eight-game residency.

Rookie Patrick Corbin gets the nod for Arizona today and he is 5-6 with a 4.13 earned run average in 17 games (12 starts). He is 0-2 in his past three outings and allowed four runs and seven hits in five innings of a 9-8 loss at the Giants on Monday. He did not record a decision.

Corbin has faced San Diego twice this season (1 start) and is 0-1 with a 9.00 ERA. The lefty is 3-3 in 10 road games, seven of which have been starts.

The Padres are 9 1/2 games off a wild card spot and had a three-game winning streak come to an end last night.

Logan Forsythe hit a two-run homer and starting pitcher Casey Kelly was saddled with the loss, giving up six runs on eight hits in only 2 1/3 innings. Chase Headley was 0-for-4 and entered the game batting .338 with 14 homers, 26 runs and 46 RBI since Aug. 1.

San Diego is 1-1 on a nine-game homestand and will also host St. Louis and Colorado on the residency.

Padres rookie Andrew Werner draws the start today and he is 1-1 with a 3.00 earned run average in three starts. He did not factor in the outcome of a 4-3 loss at Los Angeles on Monday and allowed two runs in six innings.

Werner, a left-hander, has never faced the Diamondbacks.

The Padres have won nine of the 14 matchups so far with the Diamondbacks and recently swept them in a three-game series from Aug. 24-26. San Diego had won seven in a row against Arizona until Saturday's loss.

It's been more than two decades since the football team at the University of Colorado hoisted its one and only national championship trophy, and the program has struggled to remain relevant ever since.
