Recap: Arizona vs. St. Louis

Phoenix, AZ (Sports Network) - Allen Craig hit a two-run home run and Kyle Lohse threw five strong innings as the St. Louis Cardinals capped a three-game sweep of the Arizona Diamondbacks with a 7-2 win on Wednesday.

Lohse (5-1) gave up just one run on seven hits and added a base hit and a run scored from the plate for the Cardinals, who went 4-2 on their six-game road trip. Matt Holliday hit a two-run double while Rafael Furcal went 4-for-5 with a run scored in the win.

"It's nice to come in here and finish (the sweep) off and get out of here on a good note," said Cardinals manager Mike Matheny.

Wade Miley (3-1) gave up three runs on 10 hits over 5 2/3 innings and also drove in a run for the Diamondbacks, who have lost five straight and seven of eight. Aaron Hill drove in the other run while Lyle Overbay and Ryan Roberts each posted three hits.

An RBI single from Miley in the second scored Overbay to give the Diamondbacks a 1-0 lead, but Arizona had a chance to add in the fourth taken away when Overbay was thrown out at home when Roberts singled to center.

The Cardinals tied the game in the fifth. With one out, Lohse singled and Furcal followed with a base hit to put runners at the corners. Carlos Beltran then hit a grounder to third that saw the ball jump up on Roberts, allowing Lohse to score.

St. Louis took the lead for good in the sixth. David Freese led off with a walk, but the next two batters recorded outs. Tony Cruz then kept the inning alive with a single and Matt Carpenter followed with a pinch-hit double to center for a 3-1 advantage.

The Diamondbacks got a run back in the sixth on Hill's RBI double, but that was as close as it got.

The Cardinals put the game away in the ninth as Holliday hit a two-run double and Craig followed with a shot over the wall in right for a 7-2 advantage.

Mitchell Boggs came on in the ninth to close the game, but loaded the bases without recording an out. Jason Motte, though, did the job as he struck out Gerardo Parra then got Willie Bloomquist to hit into a double play for his sixth save of the season.

"We just got out-executed the whole series,' said Arizona manager Kirk Gibson. "They out-pitched us, they out-defended us, they swung the bats better than we did and we're happy to see them go."

It's been more than two decades since the football team at the University of Colorado hoisted its one and only national championship trophy, and the program has struggled to remain relevant ever since.
