Recap: Boston vs. Seattle

Boston, MA (Sports Network) - Josh Beckett tossed seven scoreless innings and Mike Aviles contributed two hits and two RBI as Boston shut down Seattle, 5-0, in the last of a two-game series from Fenway Park.

Pitching on his 32nd birthday, Beckett (3-4) allowed four hits and two walks, and fanned a season-high nine batters.

It was a welcome reversal from his last start, against Cleveland five days ago. Beckett didn't make it out of the third inning, charged with seven hits and seven runs in an 8-3 loss.

"I felt like today I just kept the ball down," Beckett said. "I feel like I got my fingers on top of the ball, so even when it was up, I still had some angle to my pitches."

David Ortiz homered and scored twice for the Red Sox, who have reeled off five straight wins thanks to two consecutive home series victories.

Blake Beavan (1-4) was charged with five hits and three runs over just four innings for the Mariners, who have dropped four of five on their 10-game road trip.

"I felt great out there," Beavan said. "It's just frustrating when you know you're making pitches and nothing really is going your way. You just have to keep going out there and going after guys."

Ortiz reached the bullpen in right for a 1-0 game in the home third.

Boston tacked on two more in the fourth on an Aviles RBI double and a Ryan Sweeney groundout.

Will Middlebrooks singled in Ortiz with one out in the fifth, and Beckett was saved in the sixth when Kyle Seager's deep fly to right was snagged near the wall by Cody Ross with runners on the corners and two out.

In the eighth, Jarrod Saltalamacchia doubled with one down and later scored on Aviles' two-out double that dropped just inside the left-field foul line near the wall.

After Beckett departed following a scoreless seventh, Rich Hill and Alfredo Aceves combined to send down the final six Seattle batters in order.

Boston has won seven of the last 11 meetings with Seattle, including a 6-0 record at home against the M's...Prior to the contest, the Sox honored pitcher Tim Wakefield, who retired at in February after 17 seasons with Boston...The knuckleballer won more games at Fenway than any other pitcher in history...Ichiro Suzuki singled twice, the lone Mariner with more than one hit in the contest.
