Recap: Toronto vs. NY Yankees

Toronto, ON (Sports Network) - Brandon Morrow tossed seven scoreless innings and Edwin Encarnacion went 3-for-4 with three RBI, as the last-place Toronto Blue Jays kept the New York Yankees from padding their AL East lead with a 6-0 victory in the opener of a four-game series.

The loss moved the idle Baltimore Orioles within one game of New York with six to play.

Morrow (9-7) scattered four hits and three walks while striking out three for the Blue Jays, who were coming off a split of a four-game series in Baltimore.

"I was just trying to put up strikes the whole time and stay within myself," Morrow admitted. "I wasn't overthrowing. I thought I had pretty good stuff."

Brett Lawrie went 2-for-4 with a two-run homer, while J.P. Arencibia also had two hits, including a solo shot, in the win.

Ivan Nova (12-8) surrendered four runs on six hits and two walks over 4 2/3 innings to take the loss, New York's third in five games.

Toronto, starting its final homestand of the year, broke a scoreless tie in the third inning when Lawrie took a high, outside pitch over the right-field wall. Anthony Gose worked a walk prior to Lawrie's first homer since July 22.

"(Nova) just left a fastball up, and Lawrie jumped all over it," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said of the home-run ball.

Encarnacion had an opposite-field double that knocked in Gose and Colby Rasmus in the fifth inning, then plated Lawrie in the seventh with a groundout.

Arencibia homered off David Aardsma in the eighth to cap the scoring.

Morrow got some help from his defense in the fourth when Gose tracked down Nick Swisher's deep fly to left field and caught the ball while crashing into the wall. Gose then turned and doubled off Robinson Cano at first base.

The Yankees threatened again in the seventh when Cano led off with a double and Swisher walked, but Morrow struck out Curtis Granderson and retired Russell Martin and Raul Ibanez on flyouts to keep the visitors off the board.

Brad Lincoln and Darren Oliver each tossed an inning of relief behind Morrow to finish off the shutout.

Encarnacion has 110 RBI this year -- 34 more than his previous career high ... Morrow threw 63 of his 96 pitches for strikes ... Cano had three of the Yankees' five hits, with Martin recording the other two ... Game time: 2:36.
