Recap: NY Mets vs. San Diego

Flushing, NY (Sports Network) - R.A. Dickey spun 7 1/3 scoreless innings Sunday as the New York Mets took a 2-0 victory over the San Diego Padres in the finale of a four-game set at Citi Field.

Dickey (7-1) surrendered just three hits and a walk while striking out 10 to earn his fifth straight victory. After fanning 11 in his last outing, Dickey posted back-to-back double-digit strikeouts for the first time in his career and became the first Met to accomplish the feat since Pedro Martinez in 2006.

"The game is about ebbs and flows and right now, I'm fortunate to be in the middle of a flow," remarked Dickey. "The key is just don't get out of the water, regardless of where you are."

Daniel Murphy stroked an RBI single while David Wright and Mike Baxter each scored a run for the Mets, who took the final three games of the series and have now won five of their last six.

Edinson Volquez (2-5) labored through 5 2/3 innings, allowing two runs on five hits and three walks while fanning five. Yonder Alonso extended his hitting streak to 10 games with a single in the first, but the Padres failed to score for the second straight game and lost for the sixth time in seven tries.

Alonso ripped a two-out single in the first, but was gunned down trying to stretch it into a double by right fielder Lucas Duda.

The Mets then took advantage of their opportunity in the bottom half.

Wright worked a two-out walk and swiped second to move into scoring position. Duda then walked and Wright scampered to third on Volquez's wild pitch before scoring on Murphy's single to center as the Mets grabbed a 1-0 advantage.

"I was a little bit all over in the first inning," Volquez said. "Then I fixed my mechanics and came back and pitched better."

New York tacked on a run in the fifth when Baxter doubled to start the frame, moved to third on a wild pitch and then scored on a passed ball by Nick Hundley to give the Mets a 2-0 lead.

Tim Byrdak replaced Dickey in the eighth and retired the final two batters of the frame before Frank Francisco fired a perfect ninth to nail down his 13th save of the season and complete the Mets second-consecutive shutout.
