Billy Butler had a pair of hits and drove in a run for the Royals, who will open the season on the road against the Angels on Friday. Luis Mendoza threw the first 2 2/3 innings and allowed four hits while logging five strikeouts.

Eddy Rodriguez homered for the Padres, who got four innings out of starter Matt Palmer. San Diego opens its season Thursday at home against the Dodgers.
