Recap: Detroit vs. Minnesota

Detroit, MI (Sports Network) - Jamey Carroll's RBI single in the top of the 10th inning helped the Minnesota Twins take a 2-1 win over the Detroit Tigers in the rubber match of a three-game set.

Pinch-hitter Denard Span began the frame with a pinch-hit single to right field off Jose Valverde (3-4). Span moved to second when Ben Revere grounded out and scored on Carroll's single to center field.

Glen Perkins worked a 1-2-3 bottom half and notched his 14th save of the season for Minnesota, which swept the doubleheader after registering a 10-4 victory over Detroit earlier Sunday.

"We just didn't score any runs," Tigers manager Jim Leyland said. "We obviously need to score some runs and we just didn't do it. They shut us down and to be honest with you I didn't think they would."

Jared Burton (2-1) tossed a scoreless ninth to pick up the win.

"All you can ask for is playing games like that in September," Burton said. "Whether we're spoiling or whether we're vying for a spot in the playoffs, it's still fun and we're still hungry."

Miguel Cabrera recorded an RBI double for Detroit, which fell a game behind the Chicago White Sox for first place in the AL Central.

The Tigers opened the scoring in the first.

Austin Jackson led off the frame with a single to right field and Cabrera plated him two batters later after he stroked a double into the right-center field gap.

Detroit's defense allowed the Twins to tie the contest in fifth.

Trevor Plouffe began the inning with a walk and advanced to second on Matt Carson's base hit to center field. The bases were loaded after Detroit starter Drew Smyly pulled second baseman Ramon Santiago off the first-base bag following a Pedro Florimon sacrifice bunt.

Two batters, later, Jamey Carroll rolled one to Cabrera at third base, who came home with the throw for the force out, but Avila's toss to first was thrown into right field, allowing Florimon to score. On the same play, Revere was tagged out at third after overrunning the bag.

Game Notes

Smyly surrendered an unearned run on three hits and two walks in 4 1/3 innings, while Minnesota starter P.J. Walters gave up a run on five hits and a walk over six frames ... Minnesota was 1-for-7 with runners in scoring position, while Detroit finished 0-for-3 with RISP.
