Recap: Atlanta vs. Milwaukee

Atlanta, GA (Sports Network) - Kyle Lohse tossed a two-hit shutout and Norichika Aoki finished with three hits and two RBI as Milwaukee dumped Atlanta, 4-0, in the rubber match of a three-game series which took a testy turn in the early going.

Lohse (11-10) surrendered singles to Andrelton Simmons in the bottom of the first and Evan Gattis in the seventh en route to his second complete game in his last three starts.

Carlos Gomez homered and Sean Halton drove in the other run for the Brewers, who blanked Atlanta three times in only six meetings this season.

Paul Maholm (10-11) allowed eight hits and three runs over seven full frames for the Braves, who dropped a half-game behind St. Louis for the best record in the National League.

The Cardinals beat Washington earlier on Wednesday. Both teams have three games remaining.

Gomez launched his 23rd home run of the year to left center in the top of the first, but his trip around the bases included extended yelling with Maholm and Braves first baseman Freddie Freeman before a stop just in front of home plate as Atlanta catcher Gerald Laird made his feelings known.

"I told him to act like he's done it before and run around the bases," Freeman said.

But Gomez had a little revenge in mind from a game earlier this season between the clubs in Milwaukee, when he felt he was plunked for no good reason.

"I don't apologize for it. Just take the payback," Gomez said. "You see the replay, they hit me for no reason (back in Milwaukee). I just tried to get them back today. It was the only opportunity I had. Nothing against the organization. I respect everyone. I'd do the same thing if I was on the other side."

Both benches emptied but no further action was taken by players on either side. Gomez was kicked out by home-plate umpire Paul Nauert, while Laird and Freeman were ejected by first-base umpire Doug Eddings.

"It was strange. I guess certain baseball players have a long memory," added Braves infielder Chris Johnson. "And he was remembering when he got hit at their place. He did it on purpose. It was a crazy situation."

Milwaukee went up 2-0 in the fourth on Halton's sacrifice fly to bring in Yuniesky Betancourt, who singled, advanced on a wild pitch and moved to third on a Jeff Bianchi base hit.

Scooter Gennett kept the Brewers' seventh alive with a two-out hit, Lohse followed with a single and Aoki punched one through the left side to make it 3-0 for the visitors.

In the ninth, Gennett singled, was sacrificed to second by Lohse and scored on Aoki's flair to center for a four-run spread.

Lohse didn't allow a runner past first base for the duration of his outing, setting down the final seven batters he faced.

"It definitely got the adrenaline going earlier than expected. It felt good to put that behind me, get out there and throw strikes," Lohse admitted. "It's easier when you have a good defense behind you. You know you're going to have a good game."

Game Notes

Lohse gave up a run on four hits with five strikeouts in a 5-1 win over the Reds on Sept. 13, while his last complete-game shutout occurred on Apr. 21, 2011 for St. Louis against the Nationals in a 5-0 decision ... Milwaukee won four of six from Atlanta this year.
