Recap: Atlanta vs. Philadelphia

Atlanta, GA (Sports Network) - Atlanta's Kris Medlen was flawless on Friday.

Philadelphia's Cliff Lee slipped up just once.

Chris Johnson's go-ahead solo homer in the bottom of the eighth inning lifted the Braves to a 1-0 win over the Phillies in the second test of a four-game set.

Lee (14-8) struck out 13 and surrendered just two hits over seven innings before Johnson led off the eighth and smacked a towering shot that reached the front row of seats in left-center.

"Out of respect to the game and my teammates, I got to continue to go out there and play like it means something," Lee said. "I don't know how else to do it."

Craig Kimbrel fanned two in a 1-2-3 ninth to notch his 50th save of the year.

Medlen (15-12), who didn't yield a hit until there were two outs in the fifth when Cesar Hernandez reached base on an infield single down the third base line, allowed two hits and two walks over eight shutout frames. He struck out seven.

"That's the furthest I've ever gone without giving up a hit," Medlen said.

The Braves are tied with the St. Louis Cardinals for the best record in the National League.

Besides the eighth, the only other time the Braves had baserunners was the second.

Freddie Freeman singled to start the frame before Evan Gattis struck out and Johnson grounded out to move Freeman to second. Andrelton Simmons then reached on an infield single to put runners on the corners, but Dan Uggla fanned to end the threat.

Uggla's punchout was the first of 16 consecutive Braves retired by Lee prior to Johnson's blast in the eighth.

Chase Utley's single in the seventh was the only other hit for Philadelphia, which has dropped eight of its last nine tilts.

Game Notes

The Phillies didn't have a runner in scoring position, while the Braves finished just 1-for-2 in that area ... This was Lee's second complete game of the season.
