Recap: Miami vs. Washington

Miami, FL (Sports Network) - Washington Nationals starting pitcher Stephen Strasburg had his glove clutched, resting on his left hip, and his mouth slightly opened in a combination of shock and anger as he stood on the mound and watched Giancarlo Stanton finish his home run trot.

Stanton's shot capped the Miami Marlins' seven-run onslaught of Strasburg en route to an 8-3 win in the first of a three-game series.

Strasburg (5-7) gave up five hits and four walks in two innings. The right- hander gave up seven earned runs for the first time in his career and two innings matched his shortest major league outing. He also went two innings on May 31, but he left because of a strained right oblique.

"He just looked really out of whack with all his pitches," Marlins manager Mike Redmond said. "I'm just glad we were able to take advantage of it."

Marcell Ozuna had a three-run triple and Stanton crushed a two-run homer, his ninth of the season, for the Marlins, who won their second in a row after losing five straight.

After giving up three runs in the first inning, Nathan Eovaldi (2-0) recovered to pitch five scoreless innings. He allowed three hits and struck out five to pick up the win.

"He gave us six innings after it looked like he wouldn't last more than a couple," Redmond said. "That's a testament to him."

Washington raced out to the lead in the first. Walks to Denard Span and Bryce Harper were sandwiched around an Ian Desmond single to load the bases. Adam LaRoche knocked in a pair with a double to the right-field corner and Harper scored on Jayson Werth's groundout.

Despite having Strasburg on the hill, the Nationals' lead did not last long. Strasburg walked Justin Ruggiano, Stanton and Logan Morrison to load the bases. Ozuna lined a triple to left-center field to clear the bases and tie the game.

"I couldn't throw a strike," said Strasburg. "It's frustrating to throw ball one, ball two to every single batter."

Miami continued its rally. Derek Dietrich lined a single to right to score Ozuna and take a 4-3 lead. Adeiny Hechavarria's base hit put runners on the corners and Eovaldi helped his own cause with a single to right, his first hit of the year, to score Dietrich and cap a five-run first inning.

"I don't think anyone anticipated that," Redmond said. "Fortunately for us, we were really able to come out there and have some great at bats."

The Marlins quickly tacked on two more runs in the second. Strasburg walked Ed Lucas to start the frame. Stanton battled Strasburg, forcing a full count after two called strikes put him in the hole. Stanton eventually crushed a fastball over the right-field fence to give Miami a 7-3 lead.

The Nationals stranded two runners on base when Harper flew out to the warning track in center field to end the top of the seventh.

Miami capped the scoring in the bottom half. Dietrich singled and scored when Hechavarria doubled to the left-field corner.
