Recap: NY Yankees vs. Arizona

Bronx, NY (Sports Network) - Eric Chavez delivered a three-RBI double during a four-run 12th inning that gave the Arizona Diamondbacks a 6-2 win over the New York Yankees in the finale of a three-game interleague set.

Cody Ross singled home the go-ahead run in the 12th to cap off a 3-for-6 night, with Paul Goldschmidt also collecting three hits and Chavez finishing 2-for-5 to help the Diamondbacks avoid a series sweep.

Didi Gregorius and Martin Prado each had solo homers for Arizona, while Patrick Corbin held the Yankees to one run and two hits over seven superb innings despite not factoring in the decision.

"Their pitching, our pitching they were good," Prado said. "Fortunately for us, we scored a couple runs when we needed it."

Corbin lost his bid for a win after New York's Francisco Cervelli slugged a game-tying solo homer off D-backs closer J.J. Putz in the bottom of the ninth.

Heath Bell (1-0) picked up the victory after working a scoreless bottom of the 11th.

Robinson Cano also homered for a Yankees squad that had a three-game win streak snapped and received some bad news prior to the contest, when the team learned that shortstop Derek Jeter will remain sidelined until after the All- Star break after a CT scan revealed a crack in his surgically repaired left ankle.

"We just have to keep battling along like we have been," Phil Hughes said of Jeter..

David Phelps (0-1) was saddled with the loss after permitting four runs -- three earned -- in two innings of work. Hughes allowed just two runs while fanning six over the first seven frames.

Arizona never trailed at any point of the game, but needed to prevail in additional time after Cervelli battled back from an 0-2 count and hammered a hanging slider from Putz into the seats in left to forge a 2-2 deadlock.

The score remained that way until Phelps faltered in the 12th, serving up a leadoff double to Gerardo Parra before the Diamondbacks later loaded the bases on a catcher's interference call on Cervelli followed by Phelps hitting Miguel Montero with a pitch.

Ross then ripped a single to left to put Arizona ahead, and Chavez followed with a deep drive off the base of the center-field wall to clear the bags and give the Diamondbacks a 6-2 lead.

Tony Sipp came on in relief of Bell in the bottom of the 12th and retired the side in order to close out the contest.

Corbin kept New York's potent lineup under wraps throughout the night, with the Yankees mustering just a single and two walks against the young lefty over the game's first five innings. The Diamondbacks held a 2-0 edge by the time he took the mound for the sixth, courtesy of the long ball.

Gregorius belted the first pitch he saw in his first big league at-bat of the season into the right-field bleachers to open up the third inning, and Prado swatted a high fastball from Hughes over the wall in left to start up the sixth.

New York got that run back in its half of the frame, with Cano taking Corbin's lone mistake of the evening into the home bullpen to cut the margin to 2-1.

The Diamondbacks were in position to extend their advantage after a Montero double and a Ross single put runners on second and third with no out in the top of the ninth. However, Yankee reliever Joba Chamberlain fanned Chavez, got A.J. Pollock to bounce into a fielder's choice where Montero was thrown out at the plate, and eventually worked out of a bases-loaded jam by inducing a fly out off the bat of Cliff Pennington.

Game Notes

The homer was the first in the majors for Gregorius, who began the season on the 15-day disabled list with a sprained elbow before being activated on Tuesday. He did not homer in 20 at-bats with Cincinnati during his first action in the big leagues last year ... Cano's homer snapped a streak of 15 consecutive scoreless innings for Corbin going back to his initial start of 2013 ... The win was only Arizona's fourth in 15 interleague meetings with the Yankees, who have taken seven of the nine matchups between the teams held in New York.
