Recap: NY Yankees vs. Texas

Bronx, NY (Sports Network) - Derek Holland tossed his first shutout in almost two years, and Jurickson Profar hit a solo homer as the Texas Rangers silenced the New York Yankees, 2-0, in the rubber match of a three-game series.

Holland (6-4) limited New York to two hits and a pair of walks while fanning seven en route to his first nine-inning scoreless effort since July 30, 2011 at Toronto.

"I haven't had much success against these guys. So, you think positive thoughts. You can't let any negativity creep in," Holland said. "

Engel Beltre added two hits and Ian Kinsler drove in the other run for the Rangers, who completed their six-game road swing with a 5-1 record.

Phil Hughes (3-7) pitched well in defeat, allowing five hits and a pair of runs over eight full frames for the Yankees, who once again came up short in their effort to get manager Joe Girardi his 600th career victory.

The Bombers finished 4-5 on their nine-game homestand.

"We're struggling right now. We talked about that a little bit," Girardi said of persevering with a lineup that is missing Derek Jeter, Alex Rodriguez and Mark Teixeira.

Holland retired nine in a row after a leadoff walk to Jayson Nix in the fourth until issuing a walk to Robinson Cano to begin the bottom of the seventh. Cano was erased trying to take second on a pitch that bounced away from Rangers catcher Geovany Soto, then Vernon Wells fanned and Zoilo Almonte flied out.

The next six Yankee hitters went quietly, including three by strikeout. Nix flied to center to cap Holland's excellent performance.

Texas picked up its first run in the third. David Murphy hit a leadoff single but was ruled out at second when he moved away from the bag and was tagged while attempting to move up as Profar checked his swing on a 3-2 count. Profar was given the walk, then advanced to third on a Beltre single before coming in on a Kinsler fly to left.

After the Yankees stranded a runner on second with one out in the home fourth, Profar started the fifth with a blast to right to make it 2-0.

Game Notes
