Recap: Toronto vs. Texas

Toronto, ON (Sports Network) - One day after the Rangers and Toronto staggered through an 18-inning marathon, Texas made sure to keep Sunday's contest to nine innings.

Adrian Beltre hit a go-ahead home run in the seventh inning and Joe Nathan escaped trouble in the ninth as the Rangers avoided a three-game sweep against the Blue Jays with a 6-4 win.

With two outs in the seventh, Neil Wagner (1-1) came out in relief for the hosts, but Beltre connected on a 1-2 pitch, depositing it over the right-field wall.

Nelson Cruz homered and drove in two runs, David Murphy added a solo shot, and Chris McGuiness recorded his first career RBI for the victorious visitors.

"We don't quit," Rangers manager Ron Washington said. "We got some big hits in some situations and that's what it takes."

Texas starter Justin Grimm gave up four runs on five hits and three walks while striking out six over 5 2/3 innings in a no-decision. Neal Cotts (2-0) got the final out of the sixth and the first two in the seventh to pick up the win while Nathan notched his 19th save of the season by stranding two in scoring position.

Adam Lind hit a three-run homer and Edwin Encarnacion drove in the other run for the Jays, who were looking to tie a season high with their fourth straight win.

Starter Josh Johnson needed 109 pitches to get through five innings, surrendering three runs on five hits along with four walks and as many strikeouts.

"Ideally, we're looking for more innings, but that didn't happen," Blue Jays manager John Gibbons said of Johnson.

In the third, Melky Cabrera walked with two outs and Jose Bautista reached first as Rangers' second baseman Jurickson Profar was unable to make a grab and the ball fell for a single. Encarnacion then singled to left, scoring Cabrera, followed by Lind's three-run smash.

Cruz's solo shot came with two outs in the fourth. David Murphy drew a walk and scored on a double by McGuiness to cut the deficit to 4-2.

An inning later, Cruz delivered again. With two outs, A.J. Pierzynski doubled to right and Adrian Beltre hit an infield single, Cruz then singled to left- center, plating Pierzynski.

In the sixth, with one out and two on, Craig Gentry stole second. In an attempt to beat the run, catcher Josh Thole overthrew the ball to second baseman Emilio Bonifacio, allowing Leury Garcia to score.

Dustin McGowan pitched in the eighth for the Blue Jays but gave up a home run to Murphy on his first pitch.

In the ninth, Nathan walked pinch-hitter Maicer Izturis to start the inning. Munenori Kawasaki hit a grounder towards shortstop Elvis Andrus, who couldn't keep the ball in his glove. Melky Cabrera then bunted to put the runners in scoring position.

The next batter, Bautista, though struck out on three pitches. He was not happy with the third strike call and was ejected after arguing with home plate umpire Gary Darling.

Edwin Encarnacion popped out to second to end the game.

Game Notes

Lind's homer passed Jose Cruz for 10th-most in franchise history ... Encarnacion has 51 RBI this season ... Adrian Beltre is on a 14-game hitting streak, the longest current streak in the American League ... Toronto has not swept Texas since May 14-16, 2010.
