Recap: Philadelphia vs. Kansas City

Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - Chris Getz and Alex Gordon each hit bases- clearing triples as the Kansas City Royals scored 13 runs over the final five innings to take a 13-4 win over the Philadelphia Phillies.

Getz and Gordon had three hits apiece for the Royals, who recorded 19 hits. Eric Hosmer went 4-for-5 with three RBI and a pair of runs scored, Alcides Escobar hit a solo homer and knocked in two runs and Lorenzo Cain finished with two RBI and a run scored.

"We've been struggling offensively," Royals manager Ned Yost said. "We were really on a tear all spring long, we swung the bats really, really well. You knew it was a matter of time before we broke out and did some damage with our bats. Luckily for us, it was today."

Wade Davis allowed four runs on nine hits over four innings in his Royals debut. Bruce Chen (1-0) tossed a scoreless inning of relief to pick up the win in the opener of a three-game interleague series.

Erik Kratz and Domonic Brown hit solo homers for the Phillies, who fell to 3-7 in home openers at Citizens Bank Park. Ryan Howard knocked in a pair of runs.

Philadelphia starter Kyle Kendrick (0-1) allowed five runs on eight hits over 5 2/3 innings to take the loss. The bullpen -- Jeremy Horst, Chad Durbin and Raul Valdes -- combined to give up eight runs on 11 hits.

Trailing 4-0, the Royals started their comeback with two runs in the fifth. With one out, Getz, pinch-hitter Miguel Tejada and Gordon hit three straight singles to load the bases. Getz was thrown out at the plate when Escobar grounded into a force out before Hosmer followed with a two-run single to right, cutting the gap to 4-2.

Kansas City tacked on three more runs in the sixth to take the lead. Cain reached base on a fielder's choice, Getz doubled and pinch-hitter Billy Butler was intentionally walked to load the bases. Horst came in from the bullpen and Gordon greeted him with a three-run triple to right-center field, making it 5-4.

The visitors put four more runs on the board in the seventh. Hosmer walked, then Salvador Perez and Mike Moustakas singled to load the bases with no outs. Durbin took over and gave up a sacrifice fly to Cain, but Jeff Francoeur walked to fill the bags again. Getz continued his big day with a three-run triple to left past a diving Brown, making it 9-4 Kansas City.

Meanwhile, Davis, Chen, J.C. Gutierrez and Tim Collins combined to retire 12 straight Philadelphia batters before pinch-hitter John Mayberry's one-out walk in the seventh.

The Royals scored two more runs off Philadelphia's bullpen in the eighth. Escobar homered off Valdes to begin the frame. Cain added an RBI single later in the inning to make it an 11-4 contest.

Escobar and Hosmer each had an RBI double in the ninth.

"We've got to be able to finish teams off," Howard said. "You can't let off the gas. I don't want to say we let off the gas. Those guys just came back swinging, and sometimes that happens in baseball. We got beat today."

The Phillies scored four runs over the first three innings. In the first, Jimmy Rollins and Chase Utley singled to put runners on the corners. Howard followed with an RBI single to right.

Brown and Kratz hit solo homers in the second, and Howard added an RBI single in the third to give the Phillies a 4-0 lead.
