Recap: Philadelphia vs. San Francisco

Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - Brett Pill smacked a solo homer among his three hits to go along with four RBI and a pair of runs scored in the San Francisco Giants' 9-2 win over the Philadelphia Phillies in the middle test of a three-game set.

Chad Gaudin (5-2) surrendered a run on four hits and a walk over seven innings for the Giants, who jumped out to a 7-1 third-inning lead to help snap a five- game slide.

Chase Utley cracked a solo homer and added an RBI groundout for the Phillies, who have dropped nine of their last 10 contests.

Kyle Kendrick (9-8) allowed seven runs -- six earned -- on eight hits and a walk over two-plus frames to absorb the loss.

The Giants stormed out of the gate with a four-run first.

"We got a couple of hits early and got our confidence back," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said.

Marco Scutaro hit a one-out double and came home when Pablo Sandoval slapped a single to right-center. Buster Posey then singled before he and Sandoval moved to second and third, respectively, following a Hunter Pence groundout. Sandoval and Posey were pushed across on Pill's base hit to center and Pill, who advanced to second on John Mayberry's throw to the plate, scored when Roger Kieschnick singled to center.

After Utley belted a two-out solo shot in the home first to cut the deficit to 4-1, San Francisco pushed three more across in the third.

Sandoval reached on Utley's throwing error at second base to start the frame before Posey singled and Pence was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Consecutive base hits by Pill and Kieschnick brought Sandoval and Posey home and ended Kendrick's day on the mound.

"Everything they hit fell," Phillies manager Charlie Manuel said. "(Kendrick) just had one of those games where things definitely didn't go his way."

Raul Valdes came on and struck out Brandon Crawford, but Gaudin snuck a grounder through the hole on the left side of the infield to plate Pence and increase the margin to 7-1.

Pill and Crawford each smacked solo shots in the seventh to make it an eight- run spread, with Utley's RBI groundout in the eighth cutting the gap to 9-2.

Game Notes

The Giants went 6-for-11 with runners in scoring position, while Philadelphia finished 0-for-6 ... Utley's homer was his 14th of the year ... Sandoval tallied his 52nd RBI of the season.
