Recap: Arizona vs. Miami

Phoenix, AZ (Sports Network) - Giancarlo Stanton recorded his eighth career multi-homer game and provided the go-ahead run with a solo shot in the top of the ninth inning to carry the Miami Marlins to a 3-2 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks in the opener of a three-game set at Chase Field.

Stanton has hit safely in all seven games since missing six weeks due to a strained right hamstring, going 11-for-28 with four homers, three doubles and 10 runs batted in. Heath Bell (2-1) served up the difference-maker to Stanton to absorb the loss.

"Well, it's crazy how baseball is, have a no-hitter in the sixth, and it turns out like this," Stanton said. "We didn't give up. We kept battling and it worked out."

The stud Miami outfielder, who accounted for two of the Marlins' three total hits, spoiled a superb outing from Patrick Corbin, who is still searching for his elusive 10th win of the season.

Corbin carried a no-hit bid through five innings, but allowed a one-out Juan Pierre single and Stanton's first homer, which tied the game at 2-2 in the sixth.

"I said to myself before that pitch to make sure it was a ball," Corbin added, "I kind of left it there and he put a pretty good swing on it."

Mike Dunn (2-1) tossed a scoreless eighth to obtain the victory.

Corbin lasted eight innings, allowing two runs on two hits and one walk while striking out seven, but failed to earn a decision in his third straight start.

"I felt good, was cruising for a little bit, just that one pitch to Stanton, that's the only guy that Gibby (Arizona manager Kirk Gibson) said that could hurt us." Corbin said.

Paul Goldschmidt hit a solo homer and drove in both Arizona runs. The Diamondbacks have dropped four straight and seven of nine.

Steve Cishek retired the side in the ninth for his 10th save of the season.

Corbin, who still has a chance to become the first Diamondbacks pitcher to open a season 10-0, looked to be in great shape as the hosts provided him with two runs of support.

Goldschmidt opened up the scoring in the third, launching a one-out shot to right, his 16th of the season, to give the hosts a 1-0 lead.

Gerardo Parra helped the Diamondbacks extend their lead to 2-0 by opening up the fifth with a single and stealing second in between Willie Bloomquist's fly out. Goldschmidt then came through again, this time with an RBI single up the middle to make it 2-0.

The Marlins, meanwhile, couldn't muster much offense at all through the first five frames. Corbin dominated the visitors and failed to allow a hit, until the dreaded fifth inning.

After a Justin Ruggiano groundout, Pierre provided Miami with its first hit of the game, a single to left. Corbin got Ed Lucas to fly out, but made a mistake by serving up a 2-0 breaking ball to Stanton, who lifted the ball down the left-field line just over the fence to tie the game at 2-2.

Game Notes

Arizona starting pitcher Ian Kennedy dropped his appeal prior to the game and immediately began serving his 10-game suspension, which came as a result of his involvement in a brawl between the Diamondbacks and Dodgers last Tuesday. Kennedy plunked Yasiel Puig and Zack Greinke, with the latter partly setting off the bench-clearing melee ... Arizona had won all 13 games when Corbin took the hill this season ... Miami starter Jacob Turner allowed two runs, six hits and three walks over five frames ... Goldschmidt leads the National League with 61 RBI this year.
