Recap: Cincinnati vs. Chicago Cubs

San Diego, CA (Sports Network) - Edinson Volquez turned in his best performance of the season with seven shutout innings and the San Diego Padres silenced the streaking Milwaukee Brewers with a 2-1 victory Wednesday at Petco Park.

Milwaukee got a run off Padres closer Huston Street in the ninth following back-to-back two-out doubles from Carlos Gomez and Yuniesky Betancourt, but the Brewers' nine-game run came to an abrupt end when Martin Maldonado ran into his own chopper in front of the plate and was called out for batter's interference.

Shelled in his last three outings, Volquez (1-3) was efficient and in control in his fifth start of the year to help the Padres salvage the three-game set and end a five-game skid.

Volquez, given the lead on Carlos Quentin's solo homer, surrendered just five hits, did not walk a batter and induced 13 ground ball outs. Street recorded his third save of the season.

Marco Estrada (2-1) was saddled with the loss despite a solid effort. He tossed 6 1/3 innings and allowed two runs -- one earned -- on five hits and two walks.

The Brewers were gunning for their first 10-game winning streak since 2003, but didn't manage a single extra base hit off Volquez, who had given up 16 earned runs on 21 hits over his previous three starts.

San Diego jumped in front, 1-0, in the fourth when Quentin crushed a breaking pitch well into the upper deck in the left.

Rickie Weeks hit a one-out single in the top half of the inning and stole second base to give the Brewers their only runner in scoring position against Volquez. However, Gomez and Betancourt could not advance the runner.

The Padres took advantage of a Weeks throwing error in the fifth, which created a two-run cushion.

Nick Hundley reached with a one-out single and when Volquez came up to bunt him over, Hundley headed for third realizing that no one was covering the bag. Weeks tried to hit shortstop Jean Segura on the run, but the throw sailed into left field foul territory and Hundley scored easily.
