Recap: Arizona vs. Washington

Phoenix, AZ (Sports Network) - Jayson Werth broke a tie game with a tape- measure three-run homer in the fifth inning to power the Washington Nationals past the Arizona Diamondbacks, 8-4, in the opener of a season-ending three- game series.

Werth reached base in all four of his plate appearances and Wilson Ramos added a three-run homer to back a strong outing from Stephen Strasburg (8-9), who gave up two runs on six hits over seven innings.

The Nationals snapped a three-game skid by touching up Patrick Corbin (14-8) for five runs on six hits in the first five innings.

"I felt fine and healthy and made it through a full season," said Corbin. "Hopefully next year I can improve and get better and learn from my mistakes."

Arizona dropped its third straight game despite taking an early 2-0 lead.

Strasburg, making start No. 30 for the first time in his career, put the first three hitters on in the third and gave up an RBI single to Gerardo Parra and a run-scoring, double-play groundout to Paul Goldschmidt.

"You've got to grind through it, and I was able to make the adjustments in the end."

Werth scored from first on Bryce Harper's double in the fourth inning, then capped a four-run fifth with a colossal go-ahead blast off the second-deck facade in left field. Tyler Moore and Anthony Rendon opened the frame with consecutive doubles, the latter knocking in Moore with the tying run.

Ramos blew the game with a three-run homer off Chaz Roe in the eighth.

Arizona got two runs in the ninth on Didi Gregorius' RBI groundout and pinch- hitter Matt Davidson's RBI single.

Game Notes

Strasburg went 3-0 over his final nine starts and lowered his ERA to 3.00 ... Goldschmidt extended his hitting streak to 17 with a single in the fifth inning ... Corbin's ERA rose from 2.92 to 3.41 over his final three starts.

Dorm Report: Rooting for the lesser of two evils

I really do try my best not to hate anyone, seeing as how that word can be thrown around rather easily, which is why it was so tough watching the Florida State-Louisville game on Thursday night.
