Recap: Cleveland vs. Tampa Bay

Cleveland, OH (Sports Network) - Jason Giambi and Asdrubal Cabrera each clubbed two-run homers to back a stellar start from Ubaldo Jimenez as the Cleveland Indians downed the Tampa Bay Rays, 5-0, in the middle test of a three-game set at Progressive Field.

After battling until nearly 3 a.m. local time in Friday's opener, Cleveland and Tampa Bay took the field for Saturday's matinee on little sleep.

Jimenez (4-3) then kept the Rays' bats asleep for much of the day, with the veteran right-hander striking out seven while scattering four hits and a walk over eight innings.

"On a day where the only two people probably out there [who] weren't tired were the two starting pitchers," Indians manager Terry Francona said. "[Jimenez] gave us every bit what we needed, put zeros up, pounded the zone with everything. Really terrific job."

Giambi, who's homered in his last three games, also added an RBI single for the Indians, who have won three of four despite dropping Friday's opener.

Chris Archer (0-1) was recalled from Triple-A Durham prior to the game to make the start for Tampa Bay. The 24-year-old right-hander was tagged for all five runs on seven hits and three walks over four-plus frames.

Desmond Jennings registered the lone extra-base hit for the Rays, who had a six-game win streak halted.

"Our guys were legitimately tired today, and I don't blame them," Rays manager Joe Maddon admitted. "I really respected their effort today. It's a tough day to come back and play this game."

Giambi got the Tribe on the board in the second inning when he followed Nick Swisher's leadoff walk with a blast into the right-field seats to make it 2-0.

Giambi knocked in another run in the third, as Jason Kipnis doubled and Swisher walked before he laced a two-out single to center to plate Kipnis for a 3-0 edge.

Cleveland tacked on two more in the fifth when Kipnis smacked a leadoff single before Cabrera crushed an Archer changeup into the first row in right field.

With Jimenez finished after eight efficient innings, Vinnie Pestano tossed a hitless ninth to complete the shutout.

Game Notes

Tampa Bay also recalled pitcher Alex Torres from Durham and optioned pitchers Jeff Beliveau and Josh Lueke to Durham ...
