Recap: Cleveland vs. Kansas City

Cleveland, OH (Sports Network) - The Cleveland Indians used a three-run eighth inning to beat the Kansas City Royals, 4-3, in the second tilt of a three-game series at Progressive Field.

With Cleveland down 3-1, Ryan Raburn drew a walk against Kelvin Herrera (3-5) to start the eighth and advanced to second on a ground out. Michael Bourn then hit a single just fair down the third-base line to score Raburn.

Mike Aviles followed with a single and Jason Kipnis connected on a double to left to tie the game. After an intentional walk, Michael Brantley hit a sacrifice fly to bring in Aviles and put the Indians ahead.

"We don't give up a lead in the eighth inning very often, but we did tonight. They didn't hit it hard, but they put it in the right spot," said Royals manager Ned Yost.

Vinnie Pestano was able to get Eric Hosmer to ground out with the bases loaded to end the game. Two batters prior, Mike Moustakas was caught between third and home on a Alcides Escobar single that could have tied the game.

"We battled and battled, and I was fired up to go in there and lock down the save. I planned on a 1-2-3 inning, but it didn't happen that way. But, at the end of the day, no runs were scored and we got the win," said Pestano.

Cody Allen (2-0) earned the win despite allowing a run in the top of the eighth.

Hosmer and Salvador Perez each recorded an RBI for the Royals, who will attempt to win a fifth consecutive series in Wednesday's finale.

Royals starter Ervin Santana surrendered just one run on three hits with six strikeouts in seven innings. He has worked at least seven innings in his last seven outings.

Ubaldo Jimenez yielded two runs on two hits with four walks over 5 2/3 frames for the Indians, who have won five of their last seven.

Kansas City scored two runs in the third without registering a base hit.

Escobar and Alex Gordon each worked walks to begin the third and advanced a base on a wild pitch. Hosmer's groundout to shortstop scored Escobar, while Jimenez's second wild pitch of the inning allowed Gordon to cross the plate and give the Royals a 2-0 lead.

The Tribe got on the board in the sixth when Aviles slapped a single to left field to score Drew Stubbs from second with two outs. Stubbs singled to left and stole second to get into scoring position.

In the top of the eighth, Hosmer hit a routine roller back to reliever Allen, whose throwing error past first baseman Mark Reynolds allowed Hosmer to reach third. Perez then singled up the middle to increase the lead to 3-1.

Game Notes

Cleveland's Carlos Santana extended his hitting streak to 10 games ... Kansas City was 2-for-8 with runners in scoring position ... A win on Wednesday would give Kansas City its first five-series winning streak since May 11-27, 1993 ... Pestano earned his second save of the season.
