Recap: San Diego vs. Miami

San Diego, CA (Sports Network) - Andrew Cashner pitched 7 1/3 innings of shutout baseball as the San Diego Padres blanked the Miami Marlins, 5-0, in the opener of a three-game set.

Cashner (2-2) gave up just four hits and three walks on 97 pitches for the Padres, who have won four of their last five games. Jedd Gyorko smashed a solo homer while Chase Headley, Chris Denorfia and Everth Cabrera had an RBI apiece.

"I like the fact that he pitched into the eighth inning and gave our bullpen a rest," Padres manager Bud Black said of Cashner.

Marlins starter Wade LeBlanc (0-5) lasted five innings, allowing four runs -- three earned -- on four hits and three walks.

Cabrera drew a walk with one out in the first, stole second, and scored on a fielding error by Rob Brantly. Gyorko followed that with a leadoff homer in the second.

The Padres tacked on two more runs in the fourth. Nick Hundley walked with one out and advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Cashner. Denorfia and Cabrera then hit back-to-back RBI singles to give San Diego a 4-0 lead.

In the seventh, Cabrera once again walked and stole second. Headley then ripped a double to left, scoring Cabrera.

Dale Thayer pitched 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief for the Padres. He allowed a single by Justin Ruggiano in the ninth but struck out Marcell Ozuna and got Greg Dobbs to ground out to end the game.

"We didn't get it done, and we've been struggling with guys in scoring position. It's frustrating when that happens," Marlins manager Mike Redmond said.
