Recap: St. Louis vs. Arizona

St. Louis, MO (Sports Network) - Paul Goldschmidt gave Arizona some breathing room with a grand slam in the seventh inning, and the Diamondbacks downed the St. Louis Cardinals, 10-3, in the third installment of a four-game series at a rainy Busch Stadium.

Wade Miley (4-5) put together a much-needed quality start to earn the win. Miley, who had been 0-4 with a 9.14 earned run average over his previous four outings, tossed 6 2/3 innings and allowed three runs on 11 hits.

"They're a great team -- no doubt -- over there," Miley said. "But we're pretty good ourselves. So it's two good teams going out and fighting. And we've come out on top a couple of times, they've won a couple, it's just the way the game is."

Wil Nieves and Willie Bloomquist each went 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored for the Diamondbacks, who have won four of their last five games.

The Cardinals lost consecutive games for the first time since a three-game slide from April 27-29. They dropped a 14-inning marathon Tuesday and were already short on pitchers following Saturday's unexpected doubleheader.

Joe Kelly (0-3) had to make a spot-start as a result, and despite suffering the loss, the young right-hander delivered 5 2/3 solid innings, allowing just two runs -- one earned -- on four hits and a walk.

"Joe did a good job for us," Cardinals manager Mike Matheny said. "We needed that. He was good. He had a good sinker working. Probably the best changeup we've ever seen him throw. A little trouble getting his breaking balls going, but overall just a really big outing for us."

St. Louis' Randy Choate entered a tie game with a runner on first and two outs in the sixth and was greeted by Jason Kubel's line drive to deep left field. Matt Holliday tracked it down at the warning track, but the ball hit off the heel of his glove, allowing Willie Bloomquist to score the go-ahead run.

Choate stayed on in the seventh and gave up Nieves' RBI single past a diving Allen Craig at first base.

Goldschmidt, who knocked in the eventual winning run on Tuesday, came up later in the frame with the bases loaded and took Maikel Cleto deep to center field for his second career grand slam and a 7-1 Arizona lead.

Carlos Beltran plated a pair in the bottom half with a bases-loaded single, but the Diamondbacks got three runs back in the eighth via Gerardo Parra's two-run single and Bloomquist's run-scoring base hit.

Martin Prado, who doubled and scored in the seventh, did the same in the second inning thanks to Didi Gregorius' base hit.

The Cardinals tied the game in the fourth inning when Shane Robinson plated Holliday with a single up the middle.

2014-15 San Jose Sharks Preview

In another move that bucks tradition, the Sharks completely revamped their on- ice leadership structure not by selecting new players to wear the precious singular letters on their uniforms, but by stripping the captaincy from Joe Thornton, removing the alternate tag from Patrick Marleau and leaving the other "A" vacant after Dan Boyle signed as a free agent with the Rangers.
