Recap: St. Louis vs. Los Angeles

St. Louis, MO (Sports Network) - Andre Ethier, A.J. Ellis, and Zack Greinke all brought home a run, as the Los Angeles Dodgers extended their franchise- record road winning streak to 15 games with a 3-2 triumph over the St. Louis Cardinals.

The Dodgers are the first team to own such an impressive streak on the road in a single season since the 1957 Cincinnati Reds. Los Angeles is now two road wins shy of the NL record which was established by the New York Giants in 1916.

The NL West leaders have also won five in a row overall and moved to 15-2 since the All-Star break.

"It was a great crowd tonight, an electric atmosphere," Ellis said. "I think we kind of thrive on that us against the stadium type of mentality. We really come together as a ball club and it brings out the best in ourselves."

Greinke (9-3) earned his 100th career victory in the opener of this four-game set. The right-hander tossed 6 1/3 innings, while allowing two runs on eight hits and fanning four batters. He contributed on the other side of the ball as well with his single to center in the seventh that brought home Nick Punto, who doubled to left during the previous at-bat. That gave the Dodgers a 3-1 cushion.

The Cardinals got a run back in the bottom of the seventh. With men on second and third, Allen Craig's fielder's choice scored Adron Chambers. Ronald Belisario then retired Matt Holliday on a grounder to end the frame.

St. Louis starter Adam Wainwright (13-7) absorbed the loss. The National League leader in innings pitched (175 2/3) lasted seven innings and gave up three runs on seven hits while striking out five batters for the Cardinals, who have dropped nine of their last 12 games.

"We had some opportunities offensively and tonight when I was pitching," Wainwright said. "We seem to lose a lot of those one-run games. Those things come in stretches. We'll turn that around and hopefully win some of those."

The Cardinals started the scoring early in the first inning. Matt Carpenter hit a lead-off double to the center field wall. Yasiel Puig misplayed it, which advanced Carpenter over to third on the throwing error. Carpenter was then brought home by a Carlos Beltran fielder's choice. Shortstop Punto's high throw allowed Carpenter to slide safely into home to put the Cardinals up 1-0 for their only lead of the game.

Greinke escaped trouble in the third. Beltran hit a fly ball that popped out of Puig's glove as he backed up to the right field wall for a double. Greinke then hit Craig with a pitch that was high and inside. Holliday smacked a ingle off the mound to load the bases before David Freese grounded into a force play to end the St. Louis threat.

The Dodgers tied the game in the fourth when Ethier singled on a blooper to right field to bring Gonzalez home from third. Ellis beat out the throw at first to deny a double play and score Puig from third on the fielder's choice to give the Dodgers the lead.

Runners were stranded again on second and third in the fourth for the Cardinals. Jon Jay, who singled on a line drive to right, was moved to third after Tony Cruz hit a soft ground single to right. Wainwright hit a sacrifice bunt to move Cruz over to second. Greinke also struck out two batters to get out of another jam. St. Louis went 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position.

The Dodgers denied the Cardinals a run in the bottom of the fifth. Freese hit a ball deep to right field. Craig hustled from first base and headed rounded third, but Puig bare-handed the ball off the right field wall and threw to Punto who ripped a laser to the catcher Ellis, who tagged Craig at the plate to deny St. Louis the tying run.

Left-hander Paco Rodriguez spun two scoreless innings to pick up his second save of the season.
