Recap: St. Louis vs. Los Angeles

St. Louis, MO (Sports Network) - Carlos Beltran and pinch-hitter Matt Adams homered in the bottom of the eighth inning, and the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Dodgers, 5-1, to snap Los Angeles' franchise-record 15-game road winning streak.

The NL West-leading Dodgers, who lost for just the third time in 18 games since the All-Star break, were aiming for history. The longest road winning streak in MLB history is 17, last set by the Detroit Tigers in 1984.

St. Louis starter Joe Kelly (3-3) surrendered one run on six hits in 5 1/3 innings in his sixth start of the season. The right-hander's scoreless streak that spanned across four starts came to an end at 20 innings in the sixth courtesy of an Adrian Gonzalez RBI single.

"They're a really good team obviously, winning 15 in a row," said Kelly. "Kershaw is a stud, everyone knows that, but to have an all-around, good team win like that is awesome."

Carl Crawford went 2-for-3 with a run scored and a walk for the Dodgers who lost their first road game since July 6 at San Francisco.

"We had chances but we didn't execute," said Dodgers manager Don Mattingly. "We had a couple of men in scoring position and we didn't take advantage of those spots."

Clayton Kershaw (10-7), the reigning National League Pitcher of the Month, lasted six innings and allowed two runs on six hits. The league-leader in ERA (1.91) also fanned five batters in the second contest of this four-game set.

Beltran crushed a fly ball to right-center field off reliever Brandon League in the bottom of the eighth for his 20th home run of the season. Matt Holliday walked, and Adams clubbed a home run that tucked just inside the foul in right field.

St. Louis' defense proved to be a big factor. Jon Jay made a running catch to rob A.J. Ellis at the center field warning track to keep it a scoreless game in the second inning. They also turned four double-plays in their fourth win in six games.

The fourth inning brought a great play by the Los Angeles starter. Kershaw made a quick catch from one knee at the mound on an Allen Craig line drive and threw the ball over to first to double up Beltran.

Jay smacked the ball down the left field line for a double with one out to start St. Louis' offensive outburst in the fifth. Tony Cruz hit a hard liner up the middle to plate Jay, who beat the throw to home that was off target. Pete Kozma hit a double down the left field line to move Cruz over to third. Kelly grounded out, but drove in Cruz from third to give the Cardinals their second run of the game.

Gonzalez brought Crawford home from third with a line drive single to right in the sixth. Yasiel Puig and Andre Ethier both singled to load the bases, but St. Louis got out of the inning after Seth Maness induced Ellis to grounded into a double play.

Juan Uribe led off the seventh inning with a double, but was quickly thrown out at third while Nick Punto reached first on a fielder's choice. The Dodgers put two more runners on base before reliever Trevor Rosenthal made Mark Ellis pop out.
