Recap: St. Louis vs. Milwaukee

St. Louis, MO (Sports Network) - Sean Halton smacked a two-run homer and drove in three in the Milwaukee Brewers' 5-3 win over the St. Louis Cardinals in the finale of a three-game set.

Tyler Thornburg (2-1) fanned six and surrendered two runs on three hits and two walks over six innings for Milwaukee, which dropped the first two tilts of the series.

"We played a good game today. There were a lot of good things that happened," Brewers manager Ron Roenicke said.

Jim Henderson gave up a run in the ninth, but still got credited with his 25th save of the year in the triumph.

Joe Kelly (8-4) allowed four runs -- three earned -- on seven hits and a walk over five frames for the Cardinals, who had their five-game winning streak snapped.

"My stuff felt good, I just missed on a couple pitches," Kelly said.

Kelly, who was gunning for his sixth straight win, has been tremendous for the Cardinals since moving to the rotation July 6. He went 8-0 with a 2.10 ERA in 11 outings prior to Thursday's start.

St. Louis is tied with the Pittsburgh Pirates atop the NL Central Division.

The Brewers jumped out to a 4-0 lead after plating a run in the first, second, and two more in the fourth.

Aramis Ramirez's RBI groundout in the first and Halton's RBI single in the second staked Milwaukee a 2-0 margin before Halton cracked a no-out, two-run shot into the seats in left for the Brewers' four-run cushion in the fourth.

St. Louis cut the deficit in half following a two-run home fourth.

Jon Jay singled and Matt Holliday brought him home with a double down the left field line. Holliday moved to third on Carlos Beltran's flyout to right and scored when David Freese lifted a sacrifice fly to right to make it 4-2.

Milwaukee added an insurance run in the ninth when Norichika Aoki ripped an RBI triple that scooted past Jay in center to up the margin to 5-2.

Matt Adams belted a two-out solo blast in the home ninth, but Tony Cruz lined out to right and end the contest.

Game Notes

The Brewers were 2-for-7 with runners in scoring position, while the Cardinals finished 0-for-3 with RISP ... St. Louis is still 12-4 this season against the Brewers.
