Recap: Atlanta vs. NY Mets

Atlanta, GA (Sports Network) - Matt Harvey's 13-strikeout performance ended a bit shaky, but Bobby Parnell escaped trouble and notched a four-out save to secure the New York Mets' 4-3 victory over the Atlanta Braves in the opener of a day-night doubleheader at Turner Field.

Harvey (6-1), who earned his first win since May 17, took a no-hit bid into the seventh inning.

The Mets' ace set a new career high in punchouts, but was eventually charged with three runs on three hits and three walks over seven-plus innings of work.

"He's got electric stuff, he was throwing everything for strikes today," said Braves second baseman Dan Uggla. "He was working both sides of the plate. His fastball was 95-100 mph, we couldn't catch up to him."

John Buck homered and Marlon Byrd, Jordany Valdespin and Omar Quintanilla each knocked in a run to back Harvey.

Parnell struck out Chris Johnson in the eighth with the bases loaded before working a scoreless ninth to earn his 10th save.

Atlanta, which rallied in the ninth for a 2-1 win in Monday's series opener, lost its three-game win streak.

Jordan Schafer drove in a pair of runs and Jason Heyward contributed an RBI double to the Braves' three-run eighth inning. Atlanta starter Alex Wood (0-1) went three innings and gave up one run in his first major league start.

New York's Zack Wheeler will make his major league debut when he toes the rubber in the nightcap of the doubleheader, but for a while it was looking like he might have a tough act to follow.

Harvey had lights-out stuff through the first six frames, limiting the Braves to just a pair of third-inning walks. He struck out 12 batters to that point, and took a no-hit bid into the seventh for the third time this season.

Heyward would end Harvey's bid, however, with a slow-rolling infield hit down the first-base line. Amongst confusion between a converging infield, Harvey flipped to a first-base bag that no one was covering.

"It's not disappointing at all," Harvey said about losing the no-hitter. "I'm more disappointed about the runs I gave up then anything. We won the game, so a no-hitter or not, it doesn't matter."

New York went up 4-0 in the eighth when Valdespin drew a bases-loaded walk and Quintanilla followed with a sac fly, but needed to use three relievers in the bottom half to escape with the lead after Harvey loaded the bases with none out.

LaTroy Hawkins was first to enter and served up a one-out, two-run single to Schafer, who slapped a first-pitch offering past the diving reach of David Wright at third to pull the Braves within 4-2.

Scott Rice then took the hill with two away, and Heyward laced a double past Duda and down the right-field line. Andrelton Simmons scored on the play and Rice issued a free pass to Freddie Freeman, loading the bases for Johnson.

Mets manager Terry Collins called in Parnell from the bullpen, and the closer got Johnson to go down swinging to leave all runners stranded. He then worked around a one-out single in the ninth to secure the victory.

New York grabbed a 1-0 lead in the third on the legs of Byrd and Murphy.

Murphy was running all the way from second on Byrd's grounder to the hole at third. Johnson fired to first, but Byrd beat it out and Murphy slid into home plate just before catcher Brian McCann could make the tag.

Wood's day was done after 73 pitches. He had not thrown more than 36 in any relief outing in the majors and also appeared to be dealing with a blister on his finger.

Buck's 12th homer of the season came in the fourth, when he greeted reliever Cory Rasmus with a blast into the seats in left. It was his first homer since May 24 and it staked the Mets to a 2-0 advantage.
