Recap: LA Angels vs. Seattle

Anaheim, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - The new-look Seattle Mariners offense got off to a nice start.

Justin Smoak smacked a three-run homer among his two hits and scored three times as the Mariners defeated the LA Angels of Anaheim, 10-3, in the season opener for both teams.

After ranking near the bottom in nearly every hitting category in 2013 following a 71-91 campaign, Eric Wedge was dismissed as manager and Lloyd McClendon was brought in. Seattle also signed second baseman Robinson Cano away from the New York Yankees to the richest contract in team history at 10 years and $240 million.

Cano, who hit .429 with 13 RBI in 17 games during spring training, went 2- for-4 with a run scored in his Mariners debut.

Felix Hernandez (1-0) struck out 11 and allowed three runs -- two earned -- on four hits and a walk over six innings for Seattle.

"I felt my pitches were way better after the first couple of innings," Hernandez said.

Mike Trout belted a two-run shot for the Angels, who were 78-84 in 2013.

Hitting coach Don Baylor broke his right leg while catching Vladimir Guerrero's ceremonial first pitch. The former Colorado Rockies and Chicago Cubs manager will have surgery on his femur Tuesday.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with Don," Halos manager Mike Scioscia said. "I've never seen anything like that."

Jered Weaver (0-1) fanned six and surrendered four runs -- three earned -- on six hits and three walks to garner the loss.

The Angels led 3-2 before the Mariners plated a pair in the seventh to go in front.

Dustin Ackley hit a one-out single and came home on Mike Zunino's triple to tie the game. Fernando Salas then replaced Weaver on the mound and Abraham Almonte ripped a double into left-center to bring home Zunino and give the M's a 4-3 edge.

Seattle's six-run ninth added insurance. Smoak cracked a three-run homer to right and Ackley hit a three-run triple to make it 10-3.

Earlier, Trout's two-run shot to left staked the Halos to a 2-0 first-inning lead.

Michael Saunders' sacrifice fly in the second got Seattle on the board, but LA got the run back in the third on Albert Pujols' RBI double.

Kyle Seager's run-scoring double in the sixth cut the Seattle deficit to a run.

Game Notes

Seattle finished 4-for-9 with runners in scoring position, while the Halos were 0-for-5 with RISP.
