Recap: San Diego vs. Los Angeles

San Diego, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - The San Diego Padres missed the reigning NL Cy Young winner, but were shut down by Hyun-Jin Ryu instead.

They were able to get to the Los Angeles Dodgers' bullpen, though.

Seth Smith smacked a game-tying, pinch-hit solo homer and Chris Denorfia hit a go-ahead two-run single as part of a three-run bottom of the eighth inning to lift the Padres to a 3-1 win over the Dodgers in baseball's North American opener on Sunday night.

The Dodgers led 1-0 behind seven shutout innings from Ryu before Smith, who was acquired in an offseason trade with the Oakland Athletics for reliever Luke Gregerson, cracked a shot into the seats down the right-field line off Brian Wilson (0-1).

"You get in the box and it's an at-bat," Smith said. "As a professional ballplayer you hope that you can kind of flush the fact that it's your first at-bat with your team or it's in a big spot or whatever, and just do what you've been practicing."

Yasmani Grandal then walked and Wilson committed an error on Everth Cabrera's ensuing bunt attempt. Grandal stole third and Cabrera advanced to scoring position on a fielder's indifference. Denorfia poked a single to center to bring them home.

Dale Thayer (1-0) tossed a scoreless eighth for the win and Huston Street pitched the ninth to earn the save.

Andrew Cashner allowed a run on four hits and two walks while striking out five over six innings of one-run ball in the no decision for San Diego, which went 76-86 last season and hasn't made the postseason since 2006.

Clayton Kershaw, who fanned seven over 6 2/3 innings of one-run ball to notch his first win of the season on Mar. 22 against the Arizona Diamondbacks in Australia, was scratched from his start due to an inflamed muscle in his back. He was placed on the 15-day disabled list on Sunday.

Ryu got the nod and fanned seven while yielding just three hits and three walks.

"Pitched such a marvelous game. It's a hard one to swallow," Wilson said of Ryu.

Carl Crawford's RBI single in the fifth accounted for the Dodgers' lone run.

LA swept the two-game series against Arizona in Sydney.

The Padres had chances to score in the first and second, but couldn't capitalize on their opportunities.

Cabrera walked and Denorfia singled to begin the first. Denorfia advanced to second on a throw. Chase Headley then struck out before Jedd Gyorko walked to load the bases, but Yonder Alonso grounded into a double play to end the threat.

Cabrera struck out swinging in the second with two outs and runners on second and third.

Game Notes

San Diego was 1-for-8 with runners in scoring position and left six men on base, while the Dodgers were 1-for-5 with RISP and left six men on base ... Sunday was the opener of a three-game set.
