Recap: NY Yankees vs. Baltimore

Bronx, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - Nick Markakis' go-ahead RBI single highlighted a two-run ninth inning that lifted the Baltimore Orioles to a 5-4 victory over the New York Yankees and spoiled Masahiro Tanaka's home debut.

Markakis' one-out hit off Shawn Kelley (0-1) that sent home Ryan Flaherty helped the Orioles take the rubber match of the three-game series, though they had to hold on after closer Tommy Hunter was touched for a run in the bottom of the ninth.

Tanaka served up a three-run homer to Jonathan Schoop in the second inning but was otherwise impressive in his first Yankee Stadium outing, with the Japanese sensation striking out 10 while lasting seven frames in a no-decision.

"I thought he battled out of some tough jams today," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. "I thought he made some pitches when he had to. It seemed like he got better as the night went on."

Schoop finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored and Delmon Young went 3-for-5 as Baltimore followed up a 20-hit barrage in Tuesday's 14-5 triumph with a 12-hit attack in the finale. Brian Matusz (1-0) earned the win by recording two crucial outs to strand Brett Gardner at third in the bottom of the eighth.

Carlos Beltran ended a triple shy of the cycle for New York, going 3-for-4 with a solo home run. Kelly Johnson added a pair of hits, including a solo shot of his own.

With the score knotted at 3-3, Flaherty greeted Kelley with a double into the right-center field gap to start the ninth and was moved to third on a Schoop single. Markakis then golfed a flare into short right field to put the Orioles ahead, with Schoop soon scoring an important insurance run on Chris Davis' sacrifice fly to center.

Hunter struggled at first when entering in the bottom of the ninth, surrendering a leadoff double to Alfonso Soriano and a single to Johnson that quickly placed runners at the corners. A sac fly by ex-Oriole Brian Roberts brought New York within one, but the new Baltimore closer was able to induce a game-ending double-play grounder by Yangervis Solarte to nail down his third save.

Matusz came on to face a major jam an inning earlier, as Gardner started the bottom of the eighth with a double off Evan Meek and took third on Derek Jeter's sac bunt. The lefty got Jacoby Ellsbury to pop up harmlessly to third, however, before retiring Brian McCann on a fly ball to keep the game tied.

"That was huge," said Hunter of Matusz's performance. "He's good at what he does, and I'm glad he's on our side."

Tanaka endured a rough second inning that Matt Wieters began with a single and Steve Lombardozzi laced a base hit one out afterward to put two aboard for Schoop, who clubbed a hanging slider from the high-priced right-hander around the left-field foul pole to stake the Orioles to a 3-0 lead.

He settled down thereafter, however, and the Yankees got right back in it with two runs in the bottom of the second and one more in the fourth.

Beltran put New York on the board by clobbering a Miguel Gonzalez changeup into the second deck in right, and Johnson connected two batters later for his second homer in as many days to cut the deficit to 3-2.

Beltran smacked a double in his next at-bat and advanced a base on McCann's flyout prior to coming home with the tying run on Soriano's sharp grounder to short.

Tanaka stranded a pair of runners in the fifth to continue the 3-3 deadlock and set down the final seven hitters he faced, finishing off his solid outing by striking out Young to end the top of the seventh.

"He's going to be a great contributor here," Orioles manager Buck Showalter said of Tanaka. "You feel fortunate any time you can end up with a 'W' with him on the mound."

Gonzalez lasted six innings, permitting three runs on seven hits.
