Recap: NY Yankees vs. Boston

Bronx, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - The Boston Red Sox were again on the wrong end of a bang-bang replay call.

Except this time John Farrell came out to argue.

Carlos Beltran smacked a two-run homer among his three hits and the New York Yankees edged the Red Sox, 3-2, in the finale of a four-game set.

Farrell became the first manager to be ejected following a replay call.

The play happened in the bottom of the fourth inning when Francisco Cervelli rolled a double-play ball to third base. Cervelli, who injured his hamstring on the play, was originally ruled out. Yankees manager Joe Girardi, though, challenged the call and it was overturned.

McCann, who was at third base, was rewarded with a run, which turned out to be the deciding one. The run wouldn't have counted had the double play been turned.

An incensed Farrell came out to argue the decision before being tossed. Part of that frustration may have stemmed from Saturday's tilt when he challenged a call at second base on a double by Dean Anna. The call stood following the replay, although MLB said after the game that it should have been overturned.

"Extremely difficult to have any faith in the process that's being used," Farrell said. "We felt it was clear that the replay was inconclusive."

Beltran played first base for the first time in his career after Cervelli had to exit with his injury.

"Thank God nobody hit the baseball to me," Beltran said.

Ivan Nova (2-1) allowed two runs on eight hits over 7 1/3 innings for the Yankees, who took three of four in the series. Shawn Kelley tossed a scoreless ninth to notch his third save of the year.

Felix Doubront (1-2) surrendered three runs on seven hits and three walks over 6 2/3 frames for Boston, which fell to 5-8 on the season.

The Red Sox opened the scoring in the second on Jonathan Herrera's two-out single to center, but the Yankees plated a pair in the third to go ahead.

Brett Gardner grounded a one-out base hit through the hole on the right side in the third before Beltran followed with a two-run shot into the front row of seats in left.

Mike Napoli's solo shot to left in the sixth trimmed the gap to 3-2.

David Phelps struck out pinch-hitter Mike Carp with the bases loaded in the eighth to keep New York ahead. Ichiro Suzuki robbed David Ortiz of an extra- base hit earlier in the frame with a spectacular leaping catch.
