Recap: Boston vs. NY Yankees

Boston, MA (SportsNetwork.com) - The New York Yankees put the Michael Pineda pine tar incident behind them by breaking out the bats in a 14-5 rout of the Boston Red Sox.

Major League Baseball issued a 10-game suspension to Pineda on Thursday. He was ejected from Wednesday's game against Boston for using an illegal substance.

New York pounded out 14 hits in the rubber match of a three-game series. The Red Sox, meanwhile, committed five errors in a game against the Yankees for the first time since Sept. 8, 1978 (seven errors).

"Defensively, sloppy night," Boston manager John Farrell said. "You think that's the one area that you do have some control over and yet we didn't put forth a very good defensive effort here tonight."

Mark Teixeira hit his first homer of the season for the Yankees, who went 4-3 on a seven-game road trip. Yangervis Solarte paced the offense with four RBI and two runs scored.

New York starter CC Sabathia (3-2) gave up two runs on three hits with eight strikeouts and three walks over six innings.

"I just wanted to go out and have a good outing," Sabathia said. "It felt good to go out and pitch good and get a win."

Jonny Gomes knocked in two runs for the Red Sox, who went 3-4 on a seven-game homestand. Felix Doubront (1-3) got the start and allowed seven runs -- three earned -- on six hits over 2 2/3 innings.

The Yankees scored once in the first inning and never looked back. With two outs, Carlos Beltran, who turned 37 on Thursday, reached base on shortstop Xander Bogaerts' fielding error. Alfonso Soriano followed with an RBI double to right-center field.

New York tacked on three more runs in the second. Brett Gardner led off with a walk and moved to second on second baseman Dustin Pedroia's fielding error. Brian Roberts and Gardner moved to second and third on a wild pitch. Solarte cleared the bases with a double down the left-field line. Derek Jeter's infield single put men on the corners with one out. Solarte crossed the plate on a wild pitch that was originally called hit-by-pitch.

Teixeira started a three-run third with a homer over the Green Monster. Gardner reached first on Doubront's fielding error, stole second and third and scored on Roberts' single to center. Roberts stole second and raced home on Jacoby Ellsbury's single to left-center field, making it 7-0.

Boston got two runs back in the bottom half of the third. Pedroia led off with a walk and Shane Victorino, making his season debut, doubled. David Ortiz's sacrifice fly and Gomes' RBI double cut the gap to five.

The Yankees plated five more runs in the seventh to turn the game into a rout. Another Boston error loaded the bases with no outs. Solarte then hit a two-run single to right. Ellsbury followed with a ground-rule double to right that scored Roberts, and Jeter added a two-run single.

The Red Sox scored three runs off Shane Greene, who made his MLB debut, in the bottom half of the frame. With men on the corners, Jackie Bradley Jr. raced home on Brian McCann's passed ball. Greene went on to load the bases before handing the ball over to Adam Warren. Gomes' sacrifice fly and Bogaerts' RBI double made it a 12-5 contest.

Edward Mujica's wild pitch scored Roberts in the eighth. Ellsbury walked with the bases loaded in the ninth, making it 14-5.
