Recap: Chicago WSox vs. Detroit

Chicago, IL (SportsNetwork.com) - Bryan Holaday's two-out bunt single broke a tie in the top of the ninth inning and sent the Detroit Tigers to a 4-3 win over the Chicago White Sox in the opener of a brief two-game set Tuesday at U.S. Cellular Field.

A Chicago miscue helped put the go-ahead run 90 feet away, as Austin Jackson stroked a fly ball to right-center field with one away in the frame. Right fielder Dayan Viciedo got under the ball on the warning track, but it tipped off his glove, allowing Jackson to race around to third.

Ronald Belisario (1-3) then struck out Nick Castellanos for the second out before Holaday pushed a perfect bunt down the third-base line. Belisario sprang off the mound and fielded the ball, but his throw to first was high and Jackson scored to give the White Sox the lead.

"I noticed he was staring in and then he backed up and I thought I had a good chance to lay it down," Holaday said.

Joe Nathan worked a 1-2-3 bottom of the ninth to nail down his fifth save of the season, while Joba Chamberlain (1-1) stranded runners on first and second in the eighth to pick up his first win with the Tigers.

Victor Martinez, Torii Hunter and Jackson each added an RBI for Detroit, which has won three of its last four games.

Adam Eaton and Gordon Beckham recorded an RBI and run scored apiece for the White Sox, who had a two-game win streak halted.

"We had opportunities, we just didn't cash in on them," White Sox manager Robin Ventura said.

Neither starter factored in the decision, despite both hurlers putting on solid performances. Detroit's Justin Verlander allowed three runs on six hits and three walks over seven innings, while Chicago's Jose Quintana yielded three runs on eight hits while striking out 10 over six frames.

The White Sox did all of their damage against Verlander in the third, as Marcus Semien smacked a one-out single before scoring when Eaton followed with a double into the left-field corner.

Beckham then ripped a single to right to score Eaton and after Jose Abreu fanned, Adam Dunn smacked a double to right to plate Beckham for a 3-0 lead.

Martinez's RBI single in the fourth got Detroit on the board before the visitors used a two-out rally in the sixth to even the score.

The Tigers strung together four straight two-out singles, including back-to- back RBI base hits from Hunter and Jackson that tied the game for the Tigers.

Chicago nearly broke the deadlock in the seventh when Alejandro De Aza stroked a one-out triple and Tyler Flowers followed with a walk, but Verlander struck out Semien and Eaton in succession to escape the frame unscathed.
