Recap: NY Yankees vs. Seattle

Bronx, NY ( - Robinson Cano drew the ire of New York Yankees fans once again, this time knocking in a pair of runs against his former club to help his new one, the Seattle Mariners, come through with a 4-2 victory that swept a rain-shortened two-game set.

Cano went a relatively harmless 1-for-5 with an RBI while greeted with mostly boos in Seattle's 6-3 triumph over New York on Tuesday, the All-Star second baseman's first game at Yankee Stadium since signing a 10-year, $240 million contract with Seattle over the winter. He did a bit more damage in this one, coming through with a run-scoring double in his initial at-bat and an RBI fielder's choice in his second.

Rookie Roenis Elias (2-2) gave the Mariners quite a lift as well, striking out a career-best 10 batters while permitting just two runs -- one earned -- over seven strong innings.

"He was good, Yankees outfielder Carlos Beltran said of Elias. Today he was able to pitch in-and-out and basically, we couldn't do nothing against him."

Michael Saunders added three hits, including an RBI double, in Seattle's fifth win in six outings that followed an eight-game skid from April 15-22.

Jacoby Ellsbury hit his first homer as a Yankee and fellow offseason pickup Brian McCann had an RBI single in the loss, but starter Hiroki Kuroda (2-3) was reached for four runs -- three earned -- over six innings while being outpitched by Elias.

Elias' Yankee Stadium debut got off to a rough beginning, as Ellsbury smacked the young lefty's fourth pitch of the night into the bleachers in right to knot the score at 1-1. Cano had put the Mariners ahead with a first-inning double that came after Stefen Romero reached on a single.

The Seattle starter quickly shook off the homer by striking out the next three hitters, then kept the Yankees off the board over the following four innings as the Mariners capitalized on an error by New York shortstop Derek Jeter in the third and tagged Kuroda for two more runs in the fourth.

After Jeter's misplay of a grounder off the bat of Brad Miller put the leadoff man aboard in the third, Saunders stroked a single before Cano beat out a potential double-play ball as Miller crossed the plate to break the tie.

Miller later came through with a clutch two-out single that plated Kyle Seager in the fourth, with Saunders following with a ground-rule double into the left-center field gap that increased the lead to 4-1.

"[Kuroda's] splitter is his out pitch, and the first time through the order I feel like we all learned to get that ball up," said Saunders. "After that, we put some pretty good swings on it, especially after seeing some pitches."

Cano threw wildly to second on a potential inning-ending force play to put Alfonso Soriano in scoring position for McCann, who shot a grounder through the left side that got New York within 4-2.

Elias set the Yankees down in order in the seventh, though, before Yoervis Medina and Fernando Rodney closed out the victory with a scoreless inning apiece.
