Recap: Cleveland vs. Chicago WSox

Cleveland, OH (SportsNetwork.com) - Justin Masterson picked up his first win of the season with 7 1/3 scoreless innings, and Cleveland got past Chicago, 2-0, in the middle test of a three-game set.

Masterson (1-1) allowed four hits and one walk while fanning six for the Indians, who received their lone RBI on a Nick Swisher sacrifice fly in the fifth inning.

"It's nice to go out and pitch well," Masterson said. "Anytime you're not doing as well as you hoped, it's hard not to press. But I've been really happy with my last four starts."

Scott Carroll (1-1) was the hard-luck loser, letting up two unearned runs on five hits in six full frames for the White Sox, who have dropped the first two games in the series by a combined 14-5 count.

"It just happened to be one of those days. Masterson was better, was better today than I was," Carroll offered.

Cleveland picked up a run in the second, giving Masterson all he needed to get by. Lonnie Chisenhall started with a double, moved up on an Asdrubal Cabrera fly out and scored when Sox third baseman Marcus Semien dropped a David Murphy pop up near the mound.

The Indians extended their lead to 2-0 in the fifth, as Jose Ramirez reached on a leadoff bunt single, moved to second on Tyler Flowers' throwing error on the play, was sacrificed to third by Mike Aviles and scored on Swisher's fly to center.

Masterson worked out of a jam in the top of the frame. A Chisenhall error, walk to Jordan Danks and hit-by-pitch to Flowers loaded the bases with one away, but Semien lined into an inning-ending double play thanks to a great diving stop from Swisher.

"We really needed that play at that time," Swisher said. "That ball goes through and two runs score."

Chicago went quietly in the sixth, then Adam Dunn's leadoff double in the seventh went for naught. Cody Allen came on in the eighth with Flowers aboard, then gave up a two-out double to Gordon Beckham before finishing the inning by fanning Jose Abreu swinging.

John Axford retired the side in order in the ninth to post his ninth save.
