Recap: Toronto vs. LA Angels

Toronto, ON (SportsNetwork.com) - Tyler Skaggs spun eight-plus strong frames, C.J. Cron clubbed his first big league homer, and the LA Angels of Anaheim beat the Toronto Blue Jays, 5-3, Saturday at Rogers Centre.

Skaggs (3-1) struck out four while giving up just four hits and three runs -- two earned -- over his stellar outing. The Los Angeles left-hander started the ninth on the mound, but was chased after serving up singles to Jose Reyes and Melky Cabrera.

Joe Smith entered from the bullpen and allowed a pair of RBI singles around an Edwin Encarnacion fielder's choice groundout that got the Blue Jays within 5-3.

However, Smith escaped the jam and picked up his fourth save of the season by getting pinch-hitter Adam Lind to ground into a game-ending 1-6-3 double play.

Cron stroked a solo shot in the third inning and singled home a run in the second, while Chris Iannetta smacked a two-run homer for the Angels, who had lost two straight before taking the first two tilts of this four-game series.

"Tyler is really coming into his own, you can really see the maturation process," Iannetta said of his batterymate. "He just keeps getting better and hopefully he just keeps learning how to pitch and learning how to execute."

Toronto starter J.A. Happ (1-1) lasted just 2 1/3 innings after giving up four runs on seven hits and a walk.

Jose Bautista scored once and also knocked in a run for the Blue Jays, who have lost nine of their last 10 games against the Angels.

The Blue Jays jumped out to a 1-0 lead on Encarnacion's first-inning double that scored Bautista, who reached on Skaggs' fielding error with two outs.

The Angels answered with three runs in the second, with Howie Kendrick opening the frame with a ground-rule double before scoring when Cron followed with a single back up the middle.

Three pitches later, Iannetta scorched a 2-0 fastball over the wall in left to give Los Angeles a 3-1 lead.

Cron's one-out solo shot in the third made it 4-1 before the Angels added a run in the sixth when Erick Aybar slapped a grounder to short with Collin Cowgill on second. With Aybar flying down the line, Reyes rushed his throw and fired wide of first, allowing Cowgill to score for a 5-1 lead.

Skaggs, meanwhile, retired 21 straight batters following Encarnacion's double in the first before giving up a two-out double to Steve Tolleson in the eighth. Skaggs got Chris Getz to ground out, however, to head into the final frame with a four-run lead.

"He had some good movement on his fastball," Blue Jays catcher Erik Kratz said of Skaggs. "There weren't a lot of hard hits today."

In another move that bucks tradition, the Sharks completely revamped their on- ice leadership structure not by selecting new players to wear the precious singular letters on their uniforms, but by stripping the captaincy from Joe Thornton, removing the alternate tag from Patrick Marleau and leaving the other "A" vacant after Dan Boyle signed as a free agent with the Rangers.
