Recap: Detroit vs. Minnesota

Detroit, MI (SportsNetwork.com) - Miguel Cabrera and Victor Martinez each clubbed three-run homers as the Detroit Tigers downed the Minnesota Twins, 9-3, in the middle contest of a three-game set Saturday at Comerica Park.

Cabrera's blast came during Detroit's six-run second inning, while Martinez smashed his eighth homer of the season with two men aboard in the seventh to provide the bullpen with some breathing room.

Detroit starter Max Scherzer (5-1) struck out six and surrendered three runs on five hits and four walks over six innings to pick up the win.

"I was a little off today," Scherzer admitted. "I walked way too many guys, wasn't throwing first-pitch strikes, but I made some pitches when I needed to and kept the game where it needed to be."

Brian Dozier drilled a three-run homer for the Twins, who have dropped four of their last five games.

Minnesota starter Kyle Gibson (3-3) was tagged for six runs on seven hits and a walk in just two innings to absorb the loss.

"I was happy with how all my pitches were moving, but leaving them over the middle and picking on the edges too much early in the count are two things that didn't help me," Gibson lamented. "(You) can't live in the middle against anybody."

Kurt Suzuki nearly gave the Twins a 1-0 lead in their first at-bat when he drilled a Scherzer offering deep to left, but Don Kelly made a leaping grab at the wall to keep the game scoreless.

Detroit then stranded runners on the corners in the home half before breaking through with a six-run second inning.

Austin Jackson started the frame with a single and moved to third on Kelly's double, but was cut down at the plate after Nick Castellanos smacked a grounder to third.

Alex Avila and Andrew Romine then ripped back-to-back RBI singles to give Detroit a 2-0 lead before Gibson retired Ian Kinsler for the second out.

Torii Hunter then ripped a grounder to short that Danny Santana fielded, but his flip to second tipped off Dozier's glove. Dozier scooped up the ball and fired to the plate but his throw was wild, allowing Avila to score while Romine moved to third and Hunter advanced to second.

The miscue proved even more costly when Cabrera followed with a drive into the first row of the right-center field seats to give the Tigers a 6-0 lead.

Dozier made up for the error in the next half inning when he drilled Scherzer's 0-2 slider into the seats in left for a three-run homer. Aaron Hicks worked a one-out walk and Santana doubled before Dozier's drive to left.

The Tigers got all three runs back in the seventh, as Hunter smacked a one-out single and Cabrera was hit by a pitch before Martinez belted a 1-0 fastball from Michael Tonkin into the seats in right.

Al Alburquerque, Joba Chamberlain and Phil Coke each fired a scoreless inning in relief of Scherzer to maintain Detroit's advantage.

Game Notes

Minnesota went 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position and left eight men on base ... Detroit finished 4-for-13 with RISP and stranded just four baserunners ... Cabrera launched his fifth homer of the season ... Dozier hit his ninth homer of the season.
