Recap: Colorado vs. San Diego

Denver, CO (SportsNetwork.com) - Seth Smith and Carlos Quentin each hit a two- run homer and the San Diego Padres beat the Colorado Rockies, 8-5, in the middle test of a three-game set.

Yonder Alonso hit a two-run double among his pair of two-baggers, while Robbie Erlin (3-4) allowed four runs on nine hits over five-plus innings for the Padres.

"A lot of two-out hits which was nice to see," Padres manager Bud Black said.

Troy Tulowitzki's solo shot highlighted his three-hit night, while Carlos Gonzalez pounded a two-run double among his two hits and three RBI for Colorado, which has dropped six of its last eight games.

Jordan Lyles (5-1) surrendered six runs on five hits and six walks over 3 1/3 innings to take the loss.

"He was having a hard time getting a feel for it tonight," Rockies manager Walt Weiss said of Lyles.

Colorado trailed 6-1 after three innings of play, but pushed across a run in the fourth, another in the fifth and two more in the sixth to get back in it.

Consecutive singles to start the fourth by Drew Stubbs and Tulowitzki put runners on the corners before Stubbs came home on Gonzalez's sacrifice fly into left.

Jordan Pacheco's RBI single in the fifth trimmed the deficit to 6-3.

Stubbs and Tulowitzki singled to begin the sixth before Gonzalez laced a double into center to plate both of them and whittle the margin to a run.

San Diego, however, got both runs back in the seventh. Yasmani Grandal hit a two-out single and the pinch-hitter Quentin followed with a shot over the wall in left for an 8-5 advantage.

Dale Thayer spun a scoreless seventh, Joaquin Benoit blanked the Rockies in the eighth and Huston Street tossed a 1-2-3 ninth to notch his 13th save of the year.

Earlier, the Padres raced out to their 6-1 lead after plating a pair in the first three innings.

Everth Cabrera and Smith worked back-to-back, one-out walks before Alonso banged a double off the left field wall to bring them both home.

The Rockies got a run back in the home half on Tulowitzki's blast into the seats in left, but Smith belted a two-run shot into the rockpile in dead center to extend the San Diego advantage to 4-1.

Grandal's RBI groundout and Robbie Erlin's run-scoring single in the third made it 6-1.
