Recap: Miami vs. Philadelphia

Miami, FL (SportsNetwork.com) - Christian Yelich's two-out single with the bases loaded in the ninth inning brought in the winning run as Miami claimed a 4-3 victory over Philadelphia in the finale of a three-game set.

Marlon Byrd had tied the game for Philadelphia in the eighth with a two-run homer, but Jake Diekman (2-2) undid that in the last of the ninth. He let Marcell Ozuna reach on a one-out single and Jeff Mathis kept the inning alive with a two-out base hit. Pinch-hitter Reed Johnson's infield hit loaded the bases before Yelich lined a ball up the middle to score Ozuna and end the game.

"He's nasty -- a lefty that throws 97. You can't really do much off those guys," said Yelich of Diekman. "Especially a situation like that, you probably only get one pitch or two pitches to do something with. You try to keep it simple and not do too much."

Steve Cishek (4-1) fanned two in a scoreless top of the ninth. Henderson Alvarez went the first seven frames for Miami, limiting the opposition to four hits and two walks with three strikeouts.

Ozuna added a two-run home run and Giancarlo Stanton had an RBI for the Marlins, who won the series.

Ryan Howard drove in the game's other run and Chase Utley contributed two hits for the Phillies. Cole Hamels worked seven innings, yielding six hits and three runs while striking out six and walking one.

"I haven't noticed a frustration," Hamels said as his club slid to 20-24. "There has to be some urgency, because we're supposed to win. We're all veteran guys. This team is built to win now, not later."

The Phils stranded two in scoring position in the first, then a runner on second in the third.

Miami finally dented Hamels in the home sixth, as Ed Lucas doubled with two away and scored when Stanton followed with a base hit.

The hosts picked up two more in the seventh, when Jeff Baker's leadoff single preceded a two-run shot from Ozuna.

A.J. Ramos walked Jimmy Rollins to start the eighth, then left after retiring Wil Nieves on a pop to second. Mike Dunn entered for the Marlins, but gave up a double off the wall in right to Utley and a Howard sacrifice fly to make it 3-1.

Byrd followed by launching a ball just over the wall in center to tie the game.

"Had we lost this game, it would have been a tough one," said Marlins manager Mike Redmond.

Game Notes

Miami increased its major-league high home win total to 19 ... Hamels fell four punchouts short of becoming the first starter to toss three consecutive double-digit strikeout games since James Shields (July 20-31, 2012) and the first Phillies pitcher to do so since Curt Schilling (June 12-22, 1998) ... Both clubs are in action on Friday, as the Marlins continue their homestand by welcoming Milwaukee, while the Phils head home to kick off a nine-game residency against the Dodgers ... Prior to the contest, the Marlins placed infielder Rafael Furcal on the 60-day disabled list and purchased the contract of pitcher Chris Hatcher from Triple-A New Orleans.
