Recap: Washington vs. Miami

Washington, DC (SportsNetwork.com) - Giancarlo Stanton hit a two-run homer and scored twice and the Miami Marlins beat the Washington Nationals 3-2 on Monday to open a three-game series.

Stanton had three of Miami's seven hits and right-hander Nathan Eovaldi (4-2) pitched 6 1/3 innings for the win, giving up two runs on just three hits and a walk with five strikeouts.

"I was attacking the strike zone early, trying to get us back in the dugout as soon as possible and we scored runs early," said Eovaldi.

Adam LaRoche hit a two-run homer for the Nationals, who have lost five of their last six.

Tanner Roark (3-3) took the loss in seven innings after allowing three runs on five hits.

The Marlins won for the second time in seven games against the Nationals this season and for just the fourth time in their last 18 meetings. They won for the second time in their last 14 games in Washington.

Stanton hit a two-out double in the first inning and scored on Casey McGehee's single for Miami's first run.

In the third, Stanton drove his 15th homer well over the 402-foot marker in center field for a 3-0 lead. It gave him 49 RBI for the season.

Nationals manager Matt Williams was asked about their scouting report on Stanton and said he didn't want to give too much away.

"But if it's a hanging breaking ball, he can hit it over the fence," said Williams. "And that's what it was. Sometimes if you hang it out over the plate (to him), it gets whacked. And it got whacked today."

Eovaldi gave up a one-out double to Wilson Ramos in the second inning and held Washington hitless beyond that until Jayson Werth stroked a single with one down in the sixth.

LaRoche homered on the next pitch, a low and inside fastball he golfed into the second deck above right field to get the Nationals within 3-2.

Steve Cishek pitched a 1-2-3 ninth for the Marlins to lock down his 11th save.

Game Notes

The Nationals opened a nine-game homestand ... LaRoche has six home runs this season ... Washington was 0-for-5 with runners in scoring position and left five men on base.
