Recap: Seattle vs. LA Angels

Seattle, WA (SportsNetwork.com) - Erick Aybar went 3-for-5 with a three-run home run as the LA Angels of Anaheim grabbed a 7-5 win over the Seattle Mariners in the finale of a four-game set.

Kole Calhoun went 2-for-4 with three runs scored while Mike Trout was 3-for-3 with a pair of RBI for the Angels, who earned a split of this series with the win. Matt Shoemaker (3-1) gave up three runs on four hits with six strikeouts over 5 1/3 innings.

"I got a couple of good pitches to hit tonight, got some knocks, got on base and scored some runs," Calhoun said.

Michael Saunders hit a two-run home run and drove in three and Kyle Seager added a two-run home run for the Mariners, who have lost four of their last six games. Brandon Maurer (1-4) was touched for five runs on six hits with four walks in just four innings of work.

The Angels plated a run in the first inning on a sacrifice fly from Trout and added to their lead in the fourth.

With one out, C.J. Cron tripled and later came home on a Grant Green single. Calhoun then walked and Aybar's homer to right-center made it a 5-0 game.

"I thought (Maurer) was going to put together a good game early on but that fourth inning got him," Mariners manager Lloyd McClendon said of his starter. "We battled back, just not enough."

Seattle cut into its deficit in the fourth as James Jones led off the inning with a double and Saunders smacked his third homer of the year, a shot to right, to make it a 5-2 game.

The Angels, though, got a run back in the sixth on Trout's RBI single that brought home Calhoun, who had hit a ground-rule double with one out.

Saunders brought home another run in the sixth with a sacrifice fly for a 6-3 score.

John McDonald's RBI single in the ninth scored Cron, who had doubled with one out.

Fernando Salas came on in the ninth to close the game, but got in trouble as he walked Saunders and, two batters later, served up a homer to Seager to make it a two-run game.

Ernesto Frieri then took the mound and retired the next two batters for his eighth save of the season.

Game Notes

The Mariners face Detroit for three games starting on Friday ... The Angels begin a three-game series in Oakland on Friday ... Seattle batted 5-for-18 with runners in scoring position and left 12 men on base.

Extra Points: Snyder and the Beltway radio wars

If contradiction was an Olympic sport, Chip Kelly would certainly be medal-worthy judging by his performance at the NFL's owners meeting but the Eagles coach might have to settle for silver because Daniel Snyder's critics will take the gold every time.

2015 PREVIEW NL EAST: It's the Nationals and everybody else

There isn't much after that. The Miami Marlins are loaded up for a playoff push -- likely through a wild card spot -- and the New York Mets are up-and- coming but still raw. The Atlanta Braves and Philadelphia Phillies, former powerhouses of the division, are going through rebuilds and won't contend anytime soon.
