Recap: Cleveland vs. Colorado

Cleveland, OH ( - Mike Aviles' third hit and fourth RBI of the game, a single in the bottom of the eighth inning, provided the difference in the Cleveland Indians' 7-6 decision over the Colorado Rockies.

Pinch-hitter Jason Kipnis drew a leadoff walk against Rex Brothers (2-3) in Cleveland's half of the eighth and was pushed to second on a sacrifice before Aviles' flare to short right field dropped in to snap a 6-6 tie.

"There was a lefty on the mound and a lefty on deck, so I figured he probably wasn't going to give me anything over the heart of the plate to hit," said Aviles. "So I was just trying to be patient, which is definitely not my style. I was just trying to get something to hit."

Aviles slugged a three-run homer off Rockies starter Franklin Morales earlier in the game, while Lonnie Chisenhall added a two-run shot and an RBI single to the Indians' fifth consecutive home victory.

Trevor Bauer struck out eight while holding Colorado to two runs over the first six innings. He departed with a four-run lead that vanished on homers by Corey Dickerson and Charlie Blackmon off the Cleveland bullpen in the seventh.

"I knew Bauer had good stuff and was going to throw all of it at us," said Rockies manager Walt Weiss. "He did a good job but the guys kept fighting."

Bryan Shaw (2-1) picked up the win by retiring all five batters he faced.

Blackmon went 2-for-4 with four RBI in the struggling Rockies' third straight loss, while D.J. LeMahieu finished with three hits and two runs scored.

Morales lasted 5 1/3 innings, surrendering six runs on eight hits.

Chisenhall's homer after a walk to Jesus Aguilar in the sixth inning ended Morales' afternoon and put the Indians on top by a 6-2 margin, which quickly evaporated when Cleveland's relief corps faltered in the seventh.

Dickerson began the Rockies' rally with a home run off Scott Atchison and Wilin Rosario and LeMahieu followed with singles before Blackmon greeted Josh Outman with a blast into the visitor's bullpen that tied the contest at 6-6.

Shaw restored order thereafter, however, and Cody Allen closed things out with a 1-2-3 ninth to protect the one-run edge Aviles gave the Tribe in the eighth.

Cleveland had opened up a 4-0 lead behind a big second inning that Yan Gomes and David Murphy started with singles. Chisenhall drove in Gomes with a base hit two batters later, right before Aviles belted a Morales fastball over the high wall in left field.

Bauer, meanwhile, set down the first seven Colorado hitters before running into his only trouble of the day in the third.

A walk to Rosario was followed by a LeMahieu double and a throwing error by Murphy in right field that brought in a run. Blackmon then singled home LeMahieu in front of Michael Cuddyer's base hit and a double steal that placed runners on second and third with one out.

Bauer struck out Carlos Gonzalez and Troy Tulowitzki in succession, however, to prevent further damage, then allowed just one single over his final three innings of work.

In 2013, the Montana State Bobcats made a bit of an offensive switch, going from a pass-heavy system to a more run- integrated style of play. The reason wasn't because the team was unstable at quarterback, but rather due to the fact the Bobcats were loaded at the running back position.
