Recap: Houston vs. LA Angels

Houston, TX (SportsNetwork.com) - Garrett Richards pitched a season-high eight innings and tied a career high with nine strikeouts, leading the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim to a 4-0 win over the Houston Astros on Wednesday.

Richards (5-2) snapped a three-start winless streak, allowing just four hits without a walk as the Angels snapped a season-high four-game losing streak.

"I just wanted to come out, pound the zone and give us a chance to win," said Richards. "We were on a bit of a skid and I wanted to be the guy to get us going again."

The right-hander gave up a leadoff ground-rule double to Dexter Fowler in the first inning and just three singles after that, including one to Fowler in the third.

Joe Smith threw a 1-2-3 ninth inning to seal the win for the Angels, who lost the opener of the three-game series 7-2 on Tuesday.

The Angels played without Mike Trout, who left Tuesday's game in the second inning with back discomfort after missing the previous two games.

They scored three of their runs off Houston starter Jarred Cosart (4-5), who went 6 2/3 innings and allowed eight hits and a walk with eight strikeouts.

"I had all three pitches working from the beginning," said Cosart. "Pitch count was pretty good until the sixth or seventh. Some stuff didn't bounce the right way and late in the game I didn't execute some pitches. That's the story on how they scored."

The Astros are 1-3 on the heels of a season-high seven-game winning streak.

C.J. Cron drove in the game's first run with a single in the fifth inning that scored David Freese, who had doubled and moved up on a groundout.

The Angels tacked on two runs in the sixth on RBI hits from Howie Kendrick and Freese, then Erick Aybar drove in the last one with a double off Jerome Williams in the ninth.

Game Notes

The Astros went 0-for-4 with runners in scoring position and stranded six men on base ... Cron, Aybar and Freese had two hits apiece ... Angels slugger Josh Hamilton was 0-for-4 in his second game back from the disabled list. He hit a solo homer in his return on Tuesday.
