Recap: Texas vs. Cleveland

Arlington, TX (SportsNetwork.com) - Yan Gomes hit the go-ahead, three-run homer in the sixth inning, and Cleveland rode more late offense to post an 8-3 victory over Texas in Saturday's second edition of a four-game set.

Carlos Santana launched a two-run shot, while Lonnie Chisenhall and Ryan Raburn also added RBI in a four-run eighth for the Indians, who rebounded from a loss in Friday's opener to reach the .500 mark at 31-31.

David Murphy collected three hits, an RBI and run scored for the Tribe.

Josh Tomlin (4-2) pitched into the ninth, eventually leaving after giving up seven hits and three runs with five strikeouts.

Alex Rios had three hits with Adrian Beltre and Elvis Andrus knocking in a run apiece for the Rangers, who have lost five of their last eight.

Nick Tepesch (2-2) lasted just 5 1/3 frames, allowing four runs on eight hits with four walks.

Murphy and Santana were aboard via singles before Gomes slugged a three-run shot to dead center with one away in the sixth to give the Tribe a 4-1 edge. Robbie Ross, Jr. retired the next two batters to limit the damage.

"It's early in the game, you're trying to get some runs and you hit the ball good and have nothing to show for it," said Gomes. "Then I get another chance in the fourth and ground out. This time, I was able to drive the ball somewhere."

The Rangers got two back in the home half on a Beltre RBI double to score Shin-Soo Choo and a wild pitch that scored Beltre to make it 4-3, but the Indians countered with four in the top of the seventh to put the game out of reach.

Michael Brantley doubled and scored on Chisenhall's one-out hit, then Murphy singled and Tanner Scheppers relieved Ross. Raburn plated a run with a pinch- hit fielder's choice grounder to short, then Santana hit a two-run shot to right center for an 8-3 game.

Tomlin exited after Beltre singled to start the ninth. John Axford allowed a Rios base hit, then induced a double-play grounder from Mitch Moreland and grounded out Robinson Chirinos to end the contest.

"I grew up in this weather," said Tomlin about the 91-degree reading at first pitch. "I like it. The more you sweat the better grip you get on the baseball."

Texas got on the board in the third, as Leonys Martin led off with a hit, moved to third on a Luis Sardinas single and scored two batters later on an Andrus fly to right.

Cleveland equalized a half-frame later, when Jason Kipnis and Chisenhall hit back-to-back singles and Murphy plated Kipnis on a fly to center.

"It wasn't the right idea," Rangers manager Ron Washington said of Martin's attempt to try and double off Chisenhall. "The play is to home plate to cut the run off. The cutoff man makes that decision. So there wasn't anyone at first base. There wasn't supposed to be anyone at first base. He just made a bad decision."

Game Notes

Cleveland has won six of the last eight meetings with Texas since the start of last season and three of the last five road games against the Rangers ... Tomlin's outing was his longest of the season, easily eclipsing the 6 2/3 innings worked in his initial outing of 2014 on May 6 against Minnesota ... Tomlin hadn't gone at least eight innings since claiming a 2-1 win at Seattle on April 19, 2012 thanks to going eight full frames.
