Recap: Minnesota vs. Houston

Minneapolis, MN (SportsNetwork.com) - Chris Carter and Jonathan Singleton each hit a grand slam to lead the Houston Astros in a 14-5 win over the Minnesota Twins in the finale of a three-game set.

Dexter Fowler hit a solo home run and drove in two, while Robbie Grossman had two hits and scored three runs for the Astros, who have won four of their last six games.

Houston starter Collin McHugh gave up three runs on three hits with five walks and six strikeouts over 4 1/3 innings. Darin Downs (1-0) pitched 2 2/3 scoreless innings to get the win.

Eduardo Nunez hit a solo home run and drove in two, while Josh Willingham also had two RBI for the Twins, who have lost three of their last four. Samuel Deduno (2-4) was touched for five runs on three hits and four walks in three- plus innings.

"They whacked the ball all over the place today," Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said. "It was not a good day pitching."

Houston took the lead in the second inning on a Carlos Corporan RBI single, and made it a 2-0 game in the third thanks to Fowler's leadoff home run.

The fourth inning saw the Astros increase their lead, as back-to-back RBI singles from Jonathan Villar and Fowler were followed by a sacrifice fly from Jose Altuve for a 5-0 lead.

Nunez got the Twins on the board in the fourth with his second home run of the season, a solo shot to left-center, and consecutive RBI singles from Trevor Plouffe and Willingham in the fifth made it a 5-3 game.

Houston, though, increased its lead in the seventh, as the first three batters reached base to set up Carter, who drilled a pitch over the right-field wall for a grand slam and a 9-3 advantage.

Minnesota kept at it in the home half and made it a four-run game thanks to a Willingham sacrifice fly and Nunez RBI single.

George Springer, though, got the Astros into double-digits with his leadoff home run to start the eighth.

Singleton's grand slam in the ninth put the game away.

"He can get one anyone's fastball," Astros manager Bo Porter said of the rookie. "When (he) gets out in front, there aren't a lot of parks that can hold him."
