Recap: LA Angels vs. Oakland

Anaheim, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Collin Cowgill homered to left in the bottom of the 14th inning, leading the Los Angeles Angels to a 2-1 win over the Oakland Athletics on Tuesday.

Jeff Francis (0-1) pitched around a leadoff walk to get out of the 13th inning and started the 14th by inducing a pair of groundouts before Cowgill stepped up and lined a 1-2 offering over the wall in left for his first career walk- off homer.

Cowgill finished 3-for-6, helping the Angels to a season-high fifth straight win. Josh Hamilton had two hits and drove in the other run.

"We were fortunate tonight," said Angels manager Mike Scioscia. "We had opportunities and we didn't get it done. We played a little sloppy in some areas."

Cory Rasmus (2-0) faced the minimum in two relief innings to earn the win. Hector Santiago started and tossed six scoreless innings, striking out eight, before giving way to the bullpen.

"For the most part, you couldn't ask for a better pitched game from not only Santiago, but our whole bullpen," continued Scioscia.

The score was tied until the home half of the sixth inning, when Mike Trout's walk led to the game's first run. Josh Donaldson allowed Trout to move to third on his throwing error, and Hamilton drove him in with a single to right. Albert Pujols also tried to score on the play, but was thrown out at home by Brandon Moss.

The error was Donaldson's fourth in two games.

Mike Morin took the hill in the eighth for LA and quickly ran into trouble, as Nick Punto opened the frame with a double to left. Punto moved to third on Stephen Vogt's groundout and Jed Lowrie knotted the score with a sacrifice fly to right.

The Angels threatened to regain the lead in the home half of the eighth, but Yoenis Cespedes threw a highlight reel seed to nail Howie Kendrick at home. After Hank Conger struck out to start the frame, Kendrick walked and Trout looped a double down the left field line. Cespedes chased down the ball and bobbled it, prompting Kendrick to round third and head home. Cespedes gathered the ball in foul territory just feet in front of the foul pole and fired on a line to Derek Norris, who applied the tag to a sliding Kendrick.

"You don't expect something like that," said A's manager Bob Melvin. "We know (Cespedes) has a great throwing arm. There aren't too many guys in the game that have that kind of arm strength."

Trout moved to third on the throw home and Pujols walked to put runners on the corners, but Hamilton grounded weakly to short to end the inning.

A's starter Drew Pomeranz gave up just an unearned run in seven innings.

Game Notes

Donaldson finished 0-for-6 and is batting 0-for-18 over his last four games ... Trout, who walked three times, improved to 9-for-22 with four doubles in his last five against the Athletics ... Cespedes extended his hitting streak to eight games and stole his first base of the season ... The A's have lost three of four ... Oakland went 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position and left nine on base.
