Recap: Seattle vs. NY Yankees

Seattle, WA (SportsNetwork.com) - Jacoby Ellsbury's RBI single in the eighth helped the New York Yankees snap a three-game losing streak to the Seattle Mariners with a 3-2 victory on Tuesday.

Derek Jeter's ground-rule double chased Seattle starter Hisashi Iwakuma (4-3) with one away in the frame, and Ellsbury served a Charlie Furbush offering into right to give the Yankees the lead.

Dellin Betances (4-0) earned the win for pitching the last out of the sixth and all of the seventh, while Adam Warren pitched a scoreless eighth and David Robertson spun a blank ninth for his 15th save of the season.

"I thought our defense was excellent," said Yankees manager Joe Girardi. "Hopefully (Ellsbury's) hit gets us on a roll here."

Brian McCann and Carlos Beltran supplied the other two RBI for the Yankees, who were coming off back-to-back losses to the Kansas City Royals.

Iwakuma allowed three runs on seven hits with five strikeouts over 7 1/3 innings in the setback, which snapped Seattle's three-game winning streak overall.

"He pitched extremely well," said Mariners manager Lloyd McClendon of Iwakuma. "Once he found his groove, he was strong and he threw the ball extremely well."

Robinson Cano had two hits and a run scored against his former club, while Cole Gillespie and Dustin Ackley each knocked in a run for the M's.

Mike Zunino was hit by a pitch with one out in the seventh and moved up to second on a wild pitch by Betances. Michael Saunders struck out, but Ackley picked him up with a sharp single to right that plated Zunino and tied the game at 2-2.

New York jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first thanks to some timely hitting with two outs. Jeter singled with one out before Ellsbury lined out to left.

Mark Teixeira then singled to center and Beltran ripped a double to left that allowed Jeter to waltz home for the game's first run. McCann followed with an infield single up the middle that was stopped by shortstop Brad Miller, but he couldn't make the play and Teixeira crossed home.

Seattle answered in the home half with some two-out hitting of its own. Cano slapped an opposite-field double to left with two away and Gillespie drove him in with a liner into center that cut the deficit in half after one.

New York starter Vidal Nuno avoided trouble in the second and fourth, stranding a man on third with less than two outs in both frames.

Zunino doubled with one out in the second and moved over to third on a wild pitch during Saunders' at-bat. Saunders struck out and Ackley flied out to center to end the inning.

Gillespie walked with one down in the fourth and moved over to third when Kyle Seager lifted a single into the gap in right center. Zunino fisted a fly ball out to left that was too shallow for Gillespie to tag up. Seager moved up to second on the play and Saunders followed with a deep drive to center. Ellsbury drifted back and crashed into the wall as he came down with the catch to help Nuno escape another jam.

"They made some nice plays," said McClendon. "That Saunders ball was a big play."

The New York defense wasn't needed in the ninth, as Robertson worked around a walk and struck out the side to nail down the save.
